Trophy?
« on: September 07, 2015, 05:44:25 PM »
So this is my first year hunting in Washington. I tried to last year when I moved here but I had three brain surgeries that prevented me from doing so. I have a nice bull on camera and I'm just wondering if he would be considered a trophy.

A "trophy" animal is defined differently by each and every hunter. If he meets your defenition of a trophy animal, then it is a trophy.

I would consider that a trophy elk by my defenition.

I shot a 2 point buck this year and he is a trophy. So yes that bull is a trophy.

A trophy to me is defined by a lot more than just the size of the animal's antlers. Did you work your butt off for him? Were you in a special place? Did you have some buddies or family with you that make that hunt unforgettable? You get the idea.  We can't tell you what a trophy is in your book. I'd be super proud of a bull like that.

" In today's instant gratification society, more and more pressure revolves around success and the measurement of one's prowess as a hunter by inches on a score chart or field photos produced on social media. Don't fall into the trap. Hunting is-and always will be- about the hunt, the adventure, the views, and time spent with close friends and family. " Ryan Hatfield

A majority of Washington's elk hunters will never kill an elk that nice. Many will never kill any elk.
Nature. It's cheaper than therapy.

I've been on six guided elk hunts in four different states ( two in WA).  I got elk on only three of those hunts, and two of the Bulls were smaller than that one. Bob33 summed it up perfectly.  A lot of folks never shoot a mature elk and even fewer shoot one that nice.  If it was my hunt I wouldn't think twice.
