Camping in the nooksack unit?
« on: September 10, 2015, 09:55:24 AM »
I have a key to enter Sierra Pacific land. Just wondering about any DNR land up there that I can set up camp on. I'll be there sep.24th-oct.4th. Any help is appreciated.

There is DNR land behind the Sierra gates.  Should show up if you get a good DNR map.  I know there is a chunk on the south side of the river down river from the Larsens bridge crossing.  Sierra would have the best maps that could tell you I bet.

Grandy lake campground $7 a day and it's at the 300 gate.

Congrats on drawing a permit,  Do you have the quality, or the bull elk muzzy permit?   Holding The magic key to all the red gates is awesome, but hopefully you don't get blocked in or out by the inconsiderate moron who was hunting 418 today.

There is no camping allowed up there anymore, if you come in you have to come out. The security guard will look for you all over if you don't. I'm sure people break that rule once in awhile, but I'm not a rule breaker. There are a lot of camp grounds really close, grandy creek is just around the corner. Enjoy your hunt!!!

The nooksack unit or GMU 418 consists of private , and public dnr land. Where campin is allowed.   If you are referring to private timber land than yes camping is not allowed but There is no longer a security gaurd posted and the Hamilton mainline gaurd shack so no one will know if you "come in but don't come out"

DJ (tree farm security) does do quite a bit of night patrols.

Wow, my spelling and grammar sucked in that post.  I wrote it this morning while hunting in the Nooksack,  I did see a dandy black bear today but had no shot opportunity.
"D.J." is just 1 man with a ton of land to cover.   I'm not saying you should camp on Timber company land, I'm just saying don't expect help to come looking for you if you don't come out in the evening.

Yes, I was talking about the Hamilton Main Line, since that's were a majority of the tag holders will hunt. If a forester sees you camped out up there, or DJ, you could get your key taken or a trespass ticket, so I wouldn't risk it. Plus if your driving in in the morning, out in the evening, there's a few areas you could spot a few pretty nice bulls. I guess I should have been clearer in my response.

Having a key is great and everything, but you may annoy the rest of tag holders that are walking in to that unit. I had a hunt ruined a few years ago because someone drove past as we were stalking up on a buck. Just something to consider.

Any of the other tag holders should have a key if they went to the WDFW meeting. I'll be sure to have a chain with me in case anyone decides to block any gate I need in or out of.......I'm sure they wont like where I leave their truck though.

The Mainline is a good starting point,  But if it were me I wouldn't throw all my eggs in one basket, or rely solely on the mythical gate key.  The Nooksack cows are hot right now and the Herd bulls are all over them.  I saw at least 200 head this afternoon, and half of them were in the Elk Area 4941  If I were holding a permit and a key I would be knocking on some doors.

Since I'm not a big fan of field hunting, I relied on the "mythical gate key" !
Worked out ok for me.  :twocents:
