I just got home from camp. I had to leave for work this week.
The elk are silent right now. Not even a single bugle to be heard in the woods. No responses to calls of any kind. In several places where the Bulls were screaming last year, has been silent.
We've been doing a lot of glassing to find bulls and found one yesterday morning but he got in the thick stuff before we could zero in on him.
Last night we got into a better position an sure enough, they were even closer to us and got within 225 yards of a 6x4. A fine bull, but not a day 2 bull. We watched him chase off a spike, that tried to run off with one one his cows. He laid down next to the creek, and it looked like he was trying to bugle, but with no sound.
We waited for a couple hours, hoping a bigger bull would move in but no dice.
We pulled out of the position, leaving this bull for a later day if required.
This morning we woke up to 28 degrees, clear skies and a wind direction shift. I've been getting into a high elevation position to glass the valley at first light. And try to locate Bulls since we can't get any response to calls.
Just after daybreak we found elk in the top of the basin on the far side. About 2 miles away.
With the spotting scope we found the masher we we are looking for.
He had 12 cows, and he was chasing one of them and she wasn't having anything to do with him.
As the sun broke into the ridge, the bull was starting to gather up his cows. He pushed them to the top into the trees and out of sight.
We made a plan to get in near them and do some recon for tonight's hunt.
Unfortunately I had to make the run home at noon.
I just got a text that said they couldn't find them tonight.
So they are still after it.
Just have to give a big shout out to the archery bull hunter that gave us some Intel. He was unable to connect, but was happy to share some info with us. Very gracious and not many folks share that kind of info. Without his help it may have taken us a bit longer to get on this bull.
Updates to come!
