Winter Crab
« on: September 23, 2015, 02:48:55 PM »
How does the winter crab season compare to the summer season?  I can guess the weather is more of a wildcard but how about numbers and quality of the dungies?  Mostly thinking about areas 8-2/9.  Bigger, smaller, fewer?  For some reason I've just not done this in the past.

In general, I have found them slightly larger and fewer softshells.  It should pick up where the summer season left off, i.e very good.  Lots of competition if the tribal and commercials are allowed to crab.  I crab primarily 8-2.
Look man, some times you just gotta roll the dice

what NRA said,

also winter goes to 7 days a week, which is nice if you have the option of going during the week, you can pick and choose the good weather days. Last year I was crabbing right alongside  a string of commercial pots and still limiting no problem.

Do you have any luck at the Everett Marina? I had easy limits last winter up by my Uncle's place in Kayak Point but skunked crabbing in Everett this summer.

Thanks for the comments.  I'll pick up a card when it opens and then hope for a few weekends of good weather.  I would love to score some cold weather crab.   :chuckle:

I much prefer winter crabbing.

Back in the day,we'd get 5-6 guys together and go crabbing for Christmas and New years eve dinners.

Its also really fun to wade for them on a calm mid winters night. Chest waders, lantern and a salmon net.

20 years ago we'd go around Fox Island. Don't know what that area's like any more. Used to be pretty good in the winter.

Last fall was night and day better for me than the summer. Just way fewer pots.
