When are the blacktails usually dropping into the rut? I'm in the Tacoma/Olympia area and just curious.

It all depends. I've heard mid to late October and I've heard late November. It all depends on what the deer in your area are like. I'd say that it's probably around the first week of November though. There's no hunting pressure, so they're free to pursue the ladies. Also, on a side note, my hunting partners brother shot a big 4 by 5 (i think) out of tacoma.

Bucks started cruising around the 23rd last year in my area. A little earlier the year before. Across the highway they seem to start cruising November 1st or later every year.

1st rut seems to start around the last 5 days of October.

2nd rut about 4 weeks later.  Can't forget all those does that weren't bred the first time around.

I think late rifle falls into 2nd rut, but activity definitely picks up end of Oct for first.

Last year seemed to be the best during the last weekend of regular modern season.  We also had some nice cold weather around then too.

I would say it goes from about Oct 28 to Nov 10.
:yeah:

I was going to post on this though, I saw a monster blacktail (heavy four plus brow tines) yesterday evening at 20:00 right in the Proctor District in Tacoma.  He was swollen and was on the prowl.  Here is what is really crazy, I could smell his musk even though the windows on my truck were up.

But yes it usually gets going just before Halloween and goes a couple weeks.  I would ratchet the start back by a few days and say Oct 25th or so.

Keep this in mind, does that have not been bred will go back into estrous in late Nov, early Dec.
