I walked into a gun store in Rawlins Wyoming, bought a rifle, put it in my truck and finished our vacation. NO FFL involved.
I couldn't care less about what anybody says..............

You can buy a long gun there but a hand gun has to be sent to an ffl here

It's not a crime. I asked when I was Montana a couple months ago at a well known & respected store. They're not going to jeopardize their licensing to sell one shotgun. Also, Bob pointed out the rcw for it. Handguns, though, do have to be sent to an ffl on your home state

Sorry, that is not true. Handgun, rifle or shotgun can not cross ANY state line for purchase without going through a FFL dealer in the receiving state. That is a Federal Crime. If you are hunting in another state and are returning to your state of residence there is no problem crossing state lines. You can not drive to Portland and buy a rifle and cross back over the river to bring it home. Plus the dealer selling it to you is bound by laws that you have to be a resident of the state of purchase. You legally can not even make a private purchase and bring it home. You are not a resident of that sate. What ever the receiving state is, it HAS to go through a dealer if it a legal over the counter purchase.

I've done it lots of times w/ long guns.  Every single time I have done it in recent years has been in a reputable gun store, i.e. Cabelas, Blacksheep, etc.  most recently 4 months ago post I594.  As long as you get the required NICS check from the FFL that you purchase from you're GTG

i.e. As a Washington State resident I can't buy a rifle from Idaho State resident Bob (thank you I594  :bash:) but Bob can meet me at XYZ Outdoors Emporium in Idaho and the FFL facilities the transfer after the required NICS check and I pay a nominal transfer fee.

Perfectly legal.
Firearms Owners Protection act.

Handguns need to be transferred to a ffl in the state of residency and then picked up.  Whole 'nother animal
