FYI- Got shot at in 466!
« on: October 09, 2015, 11:05:53 AM »
Muzzleloader hunt in Stampede Pass 466 this year. I was in early Sunday morning and didn't appear to be anyone else there. Got settled in next to the water shed boundary and let the wind get in my favor before starting to call. I immediately got a response about 100 yards away in the treeline past the power transmission lines. Thought I was going to get lucky.

After about an hour of bugling and cow calling there was a pop, some birds flew up in the air and the power lines started humming. About 5 minutes later same thing happened again. Sounded like .22 shots to me. Don't know if anything on the powerline can pop like that but at that point I was suspicious I was calling another hunter, anyway. Towers were about 40 yards from me. Way too close for my comfort! I grabbed my gear and got out of Dodge.

Can't say 100% it was another hunter, but if you are going in there you want to be aware of it. I believe whoever it was was trying to scare me out. Was more mad than anything and while I had a pretty good idea where he was, I couldn't see him and he could see me.  Shooting in my direction is reason enough to get arrested and I believe shooting at a power tower is, too.

Didn't see or hear any elk, but sign was good. Didn't stick around long enough to add more of a scouting report.

Not saying it wasn't shooting, but it could have been corona discharge from the line.
As long as we have the habitat, we can argue forever about who gets to kill what and when.  No habitat = no game.

Tell me more about a corona discharge. It was flat out weird. Would it pop like a .22?

My father-in-law has property in Ravensdale where I have a personal range set up that sits under the Bonneville transmission lines. My shooting buddy and I were doing some AR work a couple weekends ago, when two of the three main runs came to life. Long story short; yes, it will startle the crap out of you when they pop on. :o

Could have easily been that! I would prefer that explanation.

Funny thing was the bull bugling never moved over the course of an hour.

It may simply remain a mystery.

I like that unit and will be back in again.

Seakev, are you saying that when the power comes on a line that there is a pop and they start humming? That is what happened.

Unless I missed something I think your totally over reacting. So your bulging and hear what sonded like a .22? Maybe it was a grouse hunter? Unless a bullet hit somewhere near you how can you assume they're shooting at you?

I've had shots hit the rocks within yards of me in 340 in years past as well... up near the top of Watt Canyon both times.  The first time it happened in the late 80's... I hightailed it over the hill to the next draw over and ran into a nice little 3pt buck that I dropped.  If it wasn't for the shot's coming my direction, i would've never seen that buck.  He was my first.
The second time it happened in the mid 90's, I left that particular area and haven't been back since.

It could.  Crackling and buzzing are more common, but it can produce a sharp pop
