Dad is wanting a new muzzleloader. What is you choice and experience with ones you've tried? Ball park $300ish

I don't have any real experience with multiple brands or models as this is my first month ever shooting or handling them.
I had a cva buckhorn basically given to me. They're cheap under $150 new. Very straight forward easy to use. But I've heard from many people they have issues....mine was a rust bucket I brought back to life, it works flawlessly, and it's a beater so I'm extremely happy with it and it's accuracy.

I also bought a well used but in great condition Traditions pursuit when I couldn't get the previous mentioned Cva to shoot. The pursuit is a break action gun. I love it!! Very accurate, a pleasure to shoot and carry. It came with a Williams peep sight already on it, but I upgraded to Williams peep fire sight and front matching sight. They're fiber optic models.
This gun I enjoy so much that I'm already saving to purchase a brandnew pursuit ultralight or vortek ultralight which is a little higher grade and featured for the pursuit.

T/C 54 caliber Greyhawk ( not made anymore ) and CVA Optima V2 NW Legal Edition 50 caliber. It's new and haven't killed anything with it.

I'll second the CVA Optima V2 50 cal. nod. I borrowed my brother's last year when I got drawn for the multi-season tag and got my deer the first morning out. My husband bought me one for Christmas. Not being a hunter himself, he didn't realize it needed to be NW compliant. I called CVA and got a NW legal conversion kit for like $20 incl. shipping. It was super easy to swap out, I did it myself. It's super accurate and we got two deer down with it last week! My only advice is to use RWS musket caps with it, not CCI. Had lots of misfires and hang-fires with CCI caps. Other than that, it's reliable, accurate and user friendly.

I second this choice, I have never had a problem with CVA and they are affordable. RWS caps are a must.

I love my CVA Optima NW edition that I purchased from www.Muzzle-Loaders.com. It's 2/2 on deer for me.

I just picked up a new Traditions Vortex North West Magnum 30" barrel. It's a tack driver 300gr Traditions smackdown sst w/120gr t 7 powder. It's the ez'est muzzleloader to clean. The breech plug removes by hand, even after 5 shots. $449.00

CVA will shoot barnes with excellent accuracy. Always go with the barnes T-EZ with a cva and you'll have the right fitting sabot.

I just carried my CVA Optima for the first time this deer season. Love everything about it, especially the simple breakdown & cleaning. Well balanced gun, perfect for busting brush up in the mountains. Accurate, too.

I found that my stainless NW edition Optima likes to rust in the break-open hinge release area causing it to freeze in the closed position. Even with applying various oils and preservatives. I now store it torn down and only assemble it for hunting. Other than that it is a deer killing machine.
