Guide suggestions for fishing Alaska?
« on: January 18, 2009, 12:27:31 PM »
I want to set up a trip to Kenai with my Dad and some buddies.  Like to fish for Sockeye where we stay and then go out for King's and halibut.  Wondering if anyone has places they had a great time at or a bad time at.  I might have some follow up questions that I'd PM ya with.  I'm not looking to break the bank, just a middle of the road type of place but where you liked the people and they tried hard putting ya on fish.  Thanks for any input.

Mike

Depends upon when you decide to do your trip--  Timing is everything and which river you runs is dependent upon when your going....  End of May is fun for early Kings, troll the inlet and lower Kenai , but June starts heating up, July kills, August is exceptional but early Sept is my favorite season when all the tourist went home, and the Silvers are thick, sorry... Recommend unguided for Sockeye's, to easy to catch and pay for a guide.  Flipping fishing, more of a controlled snag of the mouth.  Fly rods are the top, feel more with the weighted line then bait caster style... And alot of idiots, you think fishing is crowed here wait till you see the "Real" combat fishing there....  Anyhow- Crowed everywhere along the Kenai during the couple runs of Reds.  Third week of June, or just after the sanctuary opens, great time to hit the Russian River for the first run and third week of July for the second run- anywhere along the Kenai at that time frame, just start driving and hit it in several places till you find the run.  Get on the web site and see if you can secure a camping spot now, or they will be gone, Russian River Camp Group (federal)  As for Kings, Prime time without a doubt for the numbers is the again the 3rd week of July but you'll have crowds and guides galore to choose from.  As for river guides, I did my own so I'd have to call a bud and see who he regularly used, there are a lot of folks from Oregon and else where that come up to guide the river, ask for a local AK guide service.  Super Tuesday is the 1st Tuesday during the third week, always a best bet for planning a day or two fishing for the big kings...  Halibut- I personally liked Seward the best with Admiral Charters, older guy, Bill Jones runs a excellent boat and books about now for the season, cause he is good....  Also a friend that runs Scotty-D Charters (Scott Davenport) out of Seward too.  Both run for bigger Halibut versus chickens and only run with 6 passengers even though both run really large boats.  Homer is the spot 90% of tourist hit for butts, it is good yes and there are hundreds of quality charters to choose from.  Also some of the northern rivers beat the heck out of the Kenai for fish, just the chance at the super big ones aren't there but you'll catch way more fish and way less crowded.  The Kultina River on the way to Valdez is my favorite of all king rivers (1st week of July), (10-15 hook ups per person in boat, per day was our average, instead of 1-2 per day per boat like the Kenai) excellent and pretty good run of Reds also... Plus the Pinks around the 4th of July in Valdez is amazing, 100 per day per person without a problem and the Silvers in late Aug---oh my.... You'd have thought you died and gone to Fish Heaven..... I like my Coho's ..............Good luck.

We did a trip up there 3rd week of July this past summer.  Stayed in Soldotna at the campground and did the combat thing from shore.  It really wasn't that bad and we caught lots of reds.  This was a meat getting trip so we didn't fish for much else.  We did catch an occasional Dolly though.  The trick is knowing the tides and how long it will take the next push of fish to get to where you are.  We also did a half day halibut trip out on cook inlet and did decent, nothing real big but a few 40#+ fish.  Great guide, I would recommend him to anyone.  I came home with about 100lbs. of fish.  PM me for details.

Gemini Charters in Valdez fishes halibut, silvers, lings, and salmon sharks.  The boat is a 30 foot raider and they travel beyond hitchenbrook island to the gulf in the hunt for big fish.  They also have a drop of hunting service which is quite reasonable.

What cohoho said. The Nush is in Bristol Bay, might be a little far from Kenai.
