Peaches Ridge Tag Filled
« on: October 28, 2015, 12:20:23 PM »
To start this story off a huge thank you to RT is in order. After learning I drew the Peaches Ridge rifle bull tag I reached out to him for a few starting pointers. I was able to make 7 scouting trips to the unit and with the help of my camera was able to see what kind of animals were roaming around the mountain. After learning the big 6x7 I had my eye on was shot during the Muzzleloader season my attention turned to trying to get a five point or better. The day finally came for myself and my friend Blake to head up and try to get this tag filled. The opening day was about wet and soggy as it could have been. I walked around the mountainside only to get soaked and see two lonely cows. After checking the weather report we learned that Tuesday was going to be pretty nice but turn again to rain Wednesday and stay rain for some time. We planned on hitting it extra hard in hopes of beating the bad weather rolling in. Since the area we had been scouting was not panning out we decided to try a different drainage in hopes of finding fresh elk sign. Shortly into our walk we began seeing fresh tracks. As we continued down moving at a snails pace to be as silent as possible, I spot out of the corner of my eye horns. I pull the rifle up, safety off and bang. The bull dives off down the hill out of sight. with my blood pumping and my body shaking we walk the short 40 yards to where the bull was only to find zero blood. My first thought was i must have clipped one of the trees and missed. After looking and not seeing any holes in the neighboring trees we follow the tracks down for about 45 yards and still not a drop of blood. My buddy turns to me and says, "I think you missed." He finally said the words that had been running through my head. With my heart about as low has i have ever felt as a hunter we continue downward. After another 35-45 more yards I do a triple take as i see i big pile of blood. Right then Blake slaps me on the back and yells, "there he is". Sure enough just ahead there was the bull piled up and the celebration began. Upon inspection the bullet hit behind his left front shoulder, hit both lungs and buried into his right shoulder. I have never had a bullet not exit a animal so i guess the lack of blood at the shot sight is normal. A huge thanks to Blake for accompanying me on this journey and I can't wait to return the favor in the future. This bull may not be a monster but he is my first branched bull and I am to the moon about it.

Buddy I am just glad I could be a part if it. Although the pack out had me second guessing my decision. Congrats on a great bull.

Congrats Man! Wish I could have been there. The cool thing about the 6x7 is it was the first picture on the trail camera. He walked through like 3hrs after we set the camera.

Just so you know, you'll see that 6x7 at 10 yards for a few minutes broadside in a day or two now that you filled your tag.

Happened to me when I drew the Observatory tag a couple years ago so I know all to well.

Apparently,  more than two hunters was trying to tag that bull. :chuckle:

Well, bad those that didn't get him but good for the hunter that did, the bull has already been taken.  Congrats to him

Yes, that's why I said 2 hunters sad, 1 hunter happy.
