I have tried to explain this to others before, way my father who was a WWII veteran and Seattle Police Officer for 40 years explained it to me as a young kid.
2nd Amendment had nothing to do with "sporting weapons"

If you read the Federalist papers (#27-30, I believe), Alexander Hamilton makes it very clear that man not only has a "God-given" right to protect himself and his family from harm, but that an armed populace will repel the growth of tyranny. The 2nd Amendment has never, ever been about our ability or right to hunt. When someone asks you why you need an AR to hunt, you can simply reply that our Founding Fathers were quite clear about the fact that we need guns to protect ourselves and our rights. We should be able to bear arms which will be a match for those our government use in case they decide that our other rights are no longer necessary.
