dehydrator ?
« on: November 19, 2015, 12:30:23 PM »
I'm looking for a dehydrator for making jerky.  Doing it in the smoker is a lot work.  I'm kind of overwhelmed with all the selections.  Any recommendations?

I have the cabelas 10 tray and I love it. I mainly use it for duck jerky but I have done some fruit. Only thing I don't like is the fan is in the middle if they would have used 2 small fans because the air does not circulate like I would like.

Duck jerky is my next project, got a big pile in the freezer.
What’s your recipe?

Most of the duck jerky that I make is teriyaki  some with random marinades the at I cook up that I never remember what I put in them. It's pretty easy. Breast the ducks place in a container of water with some salt. Let it sit in the fridge for 2-3days changing the water every day to get all the blood out. Slice thin and cover with teriyaki  (I prefer soy vet teriyaki) let sit another day or to a different pat dry with towels and dehydrate for about 5-7 hr depending on how you like it. I have to hide it from my wife or I wouldn't ever get any haha.

I have not used it, but this is the one I have been thinking about, the trays collapse into themselves so it gets much smaller for storage and you cna buy additional trays...

Right now I do mine on a pellet grill and like the results, but am pretty much limited to 2# at a time.  So either I buy a rack set-up, or I buy a dehydrator that can also do fruits and other items...

:yeah:
I picked up the 10 tray from Cabelas, and have made 20 lbs of Venison jerky in the last month. I can get about 5 lbs in it at a time. Done some fruit also. It works great, and is just the right size.
