Cougar in Willapa Hills
« on: November 24, 2015, 03:47:59 PM »
Will be in GMU 506 the next few days. Packing my 223 WSSM. Wondering if anyone has seen cougars in that unit or if you know if there is a good number of them. I know there's lots of coyotes. The 2014 harvest report doesn't even list 506 so I guess that means no cougars were killed last year?

They are definitely there but are rarely seen. I've seen a few through out the years.

A few years back I had one walk up to within 9' of me by the Niawiakum River which is near Bay Center. I was stalking a small herd of elk during archery season. Walked past 2 dead elk the cat had killed within less than 5 days on both. I was getting close to the live elk when the rather large cougar came out of the brush to see what was in his area. Sure had me rattled! I dropped the first arrow due to shaking so bad. Came to full draw with the second arrow and that's when he took off. He ran past the elk. Ended that hunt quickly.
That area isn't far from Willipa hills.

A local was telling me of one hanging around Deep River area, said "it had been seen several times" but not who was seeing it..  :dunno:
