Browning a barrel
« on: November 26, 2015, 09:12:27 AM »
I had an old Thompson Center Arms Rifle kit in my fathers stuff that I had inherited that has been sitting around for years.
Thinking how cool to have a kit my father bought in the 60's and me assembling it for my kids to use, I decided to build it, .
I chose to brown the barrel using Laurel Mountain Forge Barrel Brown and degreaser.
The stuff works awesome, the barrel looks great, but I am having problems getting the tang the same color as the barrel.
Anybody have any experience with this?
Multiple attempts and I have almost used all my browning, I almost get it dark enough, then it turns almost black.
 :dunno:
The barrel came out great, pretty straightforward. The directions are pretty simple, clean surface, wipe on and let sit, rub (descale) and repeat.

That can happen sometimes with different parts, they can take the process differently.  I used LMF to rust blue, came out dark gray/black instead of brown.  If you are not dead set on brown, maybe you can rust blue the barrel to match the tang?

 :yeah:

Different alloys will take the browning differently.  Since you have done it at least once, just redo it to the point where it is decent but not black and call it good. Case hardened metal will also be different.

I used Birchwood Casey's Plum Brown and love the look.  It is relatively rust resistant but will have to be refinishing mine this winter (after twelve or thirteen years).  I was actually thinking of doing a cerakote (or something similar) brown for better rust resistance.

Second the different alloys, different results. Some texture changes may get you closer, but not always.

I just wanted to get it finished asap.
The plan was to bring my daughter up to visit you and see if we could do a father/daughter deer hunt with the same weapon.
Unfortunately, I am not sure if my finances are going to let that happen this year.
Probably try it here closer to home, but deer are fewer in my neighborhood, so probably just a daughter hunt.
I got it close enough, after season I might redo it.
