Length of decoy cord???
« on: September 25, 2007, 05:34:50 PM »
Alright here is a topic I never thought of before. Michigan where I lived until I was 21 and Alaska where I lived for 20 years we used about 7 to 9 feet of cord (shorten if need be). I rigged my decoys for with the same here but my neighbor says that the big water hunting here I need about double that or rig the set on a gang line.(I plan on hunting Long Lake, Roosevelt, possibly Sprague Lake, and if I want to drive farther maybe Banks and/or Moses Lakes.

What do you guys think?

what little i know...my decoy cords are 12-15' long.
i am not an avid duck hunter(i have 2 dozen decoys that might get used this year, maybe :dunno: ) and other people may/will tell you otherwise...but for hunting around here on the wetside, they were never too short, which is the important part...they don't stretch very well.

" In today's instant gratification society, more and more pressure revolves around success and the measurement of one's prowess as a hunter by inches on a score chart or field photos produced on social media. Don't fall into the trap. Hunting is-and always will be- about the hunt, the adventure, the views, and time spent with close friends and family. " Ryan Hatfield

mine are about 6-7 feet in length,  I don't see any point in going over my waders and getting wet :P  I don't hunt from a boat though, so my decoys aren't going to be in that deep of water anyway.  I wouldn't think you would need that much  :dunno:  So how are you launching the boat on Long??  or are walking in to a spot?
In the river and then a long ride to a suitable place where I won't get in trouble for shooting near houses.

Each one of our 140+ dekes has around 50 ft of line.  We attached a small brass hook at the keel of each deke.  We set the decoy weight to the bottom, give a few feet (to set the weight at an angle) and a little more if it is really windy.  Then simply give a couple of twists of your line around the hook to lock it.  We always have the exact length by doing it this way.  We can hunt in 2 foot puddles or in the big water of the Columbia and never have to change out our line.
Introduce someone new to hunting this year.

I think most of my line is around 7 or 8 feet or so. I mostly hunt smaller water. No need to be much higher than I can wade with a decoy retriever. I might have to re-do them seeing as I am going to be hunting the wetside some this year.
Eastsider stuck on the wetside......

If you are going to wade out and set your decoys that is more than enough. If you set them using a boat, watch for drifters in deeper water. Good luck gil
