Nipple poker
« on: December 12, 2015, 06:39:35 PM »
I bought a nipple poke to clear the nipple out between shots at the range and it's not long enough to go down and clear the nipple it only goes like 3/4 of the way down. It's a traditions Vortek rifle that uses the thunder dome nipple. Anyone have suggestions?

I believe a short nipple poker is a common problem, but most prefer to not talk about it on a hunting and fishing site.

wire fishing leader, you can cut to right length.  Just have to match the right diameter.  The leader wire for making spinners is pretty good.

Your better off using a nipple wrench and taking it out when need be, but you shouldn't have to remove or clear the nipple between shots, I have shot many many shots at the range and never cleared it until I cleaned it at home at the end of the day.. however, I always had a few Allan wrenches, the super tiny ones, you can usually find them in the discount basket at the auto parts store! They are plenty long and the 90 degree bend gives you a good handle..
my grandpa always said "if it aint broke dont fix it"

Poking nipples can get you in trouble!! I have the same gun and it came with a nipple wrench. Other end of the breech plug wrench.

Dang 2labs we are more alike then we thought! I haven't had any problems with nipple getting plugged and I've used the wrench it came with a lot. Just thought it was preventative maintenance poking that nipple out between shots but I'll just remove it I guess and poke from both ends. Just how she likes it.

One can also go to the store and buy a pack of medium-length safety pins, then bend one in a straight upright position. Your wife or mother at home probably has one laying around the house.
