Last minute cow down!!
« on: December 15, 2015, 01:59:35 PM »
Walked into my honey hole yesterday around 2:30 due to having to work on my wife's car first :bash: but what goes around comes around because I was into elk within 45 minutes. I found a herd with a really nice 5x5 but I didn't see him right away all I was seeing was small bulls and cows so being that I was still looking for my first archery elk I was happy with a cow so I took a 60 yard quarter away shot at a fat cow and as I released I heard the string hit my coat sleeve and the arrow went wide right :bash:. The herd of 40 or so kinda scattered but still didn't quite know what was going on and that's when the big boy popped out at 60 yards standing quarter in toward me and I let one fly and it looked like a perfect shot but the last 20 yards I watched the arrow die out and drop just below him and into a branch :bash: needless to say I was very disappointed at myself and figured I had blew my chance. The elk went into the timber and I knew there was a old skidder road behind the timber in the direction they were going so I hauled butt that way to cut them off and on my way as I was rounding a corner I cought a glimpse of a elk head eating in the old grassy road I was on so I notched a arrow, drew back, took a deep breath and settled my 30 yard pit on the vitals and let her fly. Perfect shot!! She ran 100 yards and died. I shot her at 3:30 pm and I was done cleaning meat and crawling into bed this morning at 3:30 am. Thanks to ruttnbuck for helping me quarter her out and packing out. It doesn't get any better then that!!

Congratulations again brother!! It doesn't matter if it's a cow or bull any elk with a bow is a great accomplishment way to go man!  Counting the days to be in the river fishing just to enjoy elk back strap on the rubber bank

Yes I've learned this season that I MUST stay calm when shooting at a animal. I tend to get over excited and make wrong decisions like I did yesterday with the first cow and the bull. But whenever I take a deep breath and think about proper shooting habits things go well. I had the same great success with my mule deer in September, I took my time, thought about what I was doing and made a great ethical shot. It's been the best hunten season this year, I was blessed with my biggest buck and my first elk. All the Glory goes to the Good Lord!

Congrats, Martinhunter!  I'm very happy for you!  If only I had a cow tag this year.  Saw so many cows/calves, I could have tagged something.  There's always next year.
