Just trying to justify a deep bee for occasional trips to coast for crabbing and fishing,any advise appreciated.

You don't need a "deep vee" for that.  By coast do you mean the Sound or Westport/Buoy 10?  It's all about conditions.  I have a 12' Starcraft that works fine in waves 1' or less.  I've been off the big coast eight miles (from the mouth anyways) in my 13' inflatable, never felt unsafe.

People/weight capacity pf the boat is going to be as important as anything else.

Buying a do everything fishing boat is tough, deep v handles rough water great but sit way out of the water and make netting and handling fish difficult. I also enjoy crabbing and salmon fishing but live in Stevens county and only make it to the salt a few times a year so I couldn't justify a deep v when most of my fishing is on Roosevelt. I picked up a 17.5 Starcraft superfisherman last year and I am very happy with it. Small enough for small lakes and not too small for the Puget Sound.

Another good, all purpose style of boat would be something like an Alumaweld Talon or Stryker 17', though I think they are only rated for 4 people.

I've used a 14' Sylvan on the Sound and just outside the bar at Westport.  It was just fine for the weather conditions at the time.

I have been a couple miles offshore out of Neah Bay in a 16ft fiberglass and put a 100 pound Halibut in the boat. The water was so calm you could have water skied to Canada and back and not jumped a wave!

Been to the exact same spot in a 36ft steel hull charter boat and felt like it was too small!

Run a 18ft glasply these days and it does ok for most everything lake to sound 

The same size aluminum do pretty good have a couple friends that have them and they like them. Just mind the tides and weather.

Thanks a lot for your comments, I agree I also live in Stevens County and My few trips a year to Westport or Nehalem bay, San Juans don't really justify a deep V. I was looking for a fishing/family outing to Lake Roosevelt,waits lake kinda boat. When I started looking at prices of the aluminum boats I figured I would need to get enough boat, but not overkill. Thanks again!

I have a 23' hard top jet boat that is awesome on roosevelt, but looking at the launch at waitts I don't think I would want to launch a boat my size there. I had a 18' walleye tourney type boat before this and it was good for what you describe, but I had to pay attention to the weather. I was on roosevelt this year when the weather blew a storm in that hit 60mph winds and having waves over the windshield was no biggie in the 23' we would have been in full mayday mode in my 18'

I would buy a boat based on the worst weather you feel like running. ALSO.....BUDGET TR1 GOLD into the purchase. best money EVER spent.

does clarks carry garmin stuff or lowrance? I have a Garmin 7610 xsv in my boat and between it and the tr1 they made me a better fisherman without question. Lowrance has some stuff that is comparable. It will take 4-6 grand in electronics to get dialed in.
