School me on turning a 30-06 into a 6.5X284

I have an old 30-06 with a mauser action. The stock is cracked and needs replaced. I already have another 30-06, 270, and a 243. So, I was thinking about having a 6.5x284 built. It would be a gun for when my daughter gets a bit older. Also, it just seems like a fun gun to load for.

Anybody have one?

Any tips on Barrel and Stock?

Any leads on a good Eastern Washington Gun Smith?

No help on most, I hear there's a good gunsmith in kennewick, out in badger canyon, seems to come recommended quite often when I ask, I think ranch and home or hole in the wall could put you in touch with him

Potentially your biggest hurdle may be finding a gunsmith that'll build on your Mauser action.  I'm not saying they are bad or anything like that but many only work on certain actions so it could possibly be to your benefit to either sell that rifle and find a more commonly worked on donor rifle for your build.  Sometimes, it can actually be cheaper to find something else to build off of but if you're set on using that Mauser, I'm sure you'll find someone that'll build off of it.

There's a shop in Pendleton Or. (Blagg Rifles) that is supposed to do good work and wouldn't be to far from you, you'd have to ask if they'll build off of your Mauser though.

Pac-Nor in Oregon will do it. They will also test your action for hardness and get back to you if there is a issue.

The 284 can be very tricky to get feeding right in a mauser.  Why not just go 6.5-06?  No feedrail work, don't have to open the bolt face, no rebated rim... or better yet, go 6.5x55    light recoil, shoots those LOOOOONG 6.5 bullets with ease (no issue with COAL - might be a problem with 6.5-06).  How old is your daughter?  My 8 year old is not impressed with magnum muzzle blast and recoil IS a big issue!

I had benchmark barrels re-barrel a 30-06 to a 6.5x284 when they had a group buy going on and absolutely love it. I had Wayne do the stock and finish work.

which mauser is it? are you attaced to that action? you have a stock purchase to look at and a truing, barreling and possibly feed rail work. By the time you get done, a 700 from walmart may be about par and parts can be found to finish the build this year, a mauser.....not so much. if you are looking for a nice walnut blued setup, I fully see your logic.

I have a soft spot for the 6.5's, and agree that a 260/284/06/x55 would be a good choice....but pay attention to mag length on your donor as you may be money ahead in a 260ai or 6.5x55ai just based on mag length as I dont know if you can get a wyatts box for yours and the action length my bust you on a 06 with 140's

The 6.5-.284 runs beautiful on a Remington 700 with the heavies and no modifications to the follower and box with a 06 donor.

if you choose the x284, look into the brass differences and choose your reamer accordingly.

I would opt for the 6.5/06. Slight edge in velocity, smoother feeding, brass availability.

Definitely go 6.5-06 ai.  Fire form loads are the same performance as the 6.5-284 and the full power exceed it by a fair margin.
