Daughter's first trip out with 6.5x47 Lapua
« on: December 25, 2015, 07:41:46 PM »
A while back my daughter wanted me to put together a left hand rifle so that she could come shooting with me. I asked her what she wanted to do with it since she's a vegetarian. She said that she just wants to shoot at stuff far away like I do when I go out shooting. The goal was to give her something that can make it to 1000 yards without a lot or recoil or noise so both the kids can shoot it. I happened to have a left hand Savage action and matching McRee chassis sitting around that I was using for a SP project that I never shoot. I pulled the 19" 260 barrel off and grabbed a 30" Brux 6.5x47 Lapua barrel I've had sitting around for more than a year. I slapped the whole thing together a while back and just didn't have time to take her out to shoot it until today. This is the first centerfire caliber she's shot other than a .204 Ruger I used to have. We got the rifle sighted in and got some brass formed (I had a pile of 22-250 cases that I needed to do something with) before she started to get cold and we called it a day. Her expression after the first few shots was priceless!

I had to put a glove over the cheek piece because it was so cold! We're trying to decide what color she wants the gun to be. She does like the shiny raw aluminum stock with the stainless steel though.

I don't know how well it shoots yet since we were just shooting at a cardboard box to get the scope dialed in and get her comfortable shooting it. I think it will do just fine for what we're trying to do though.

These loads are running the 140 Berger since that's what I had the most of. I'm still fireforming the brass so I haven't bothered to throw the Magneto on there yet.

Here's a 22-250, a partially formed round waiting to be fired, and a fireformed 6.5 Lapua case made from a 22-250.

They turn out pretty well.

sweet rig ,,, just lying around lol.

I'm amazed at what I find in my garage sometimes! :chuckle: A while back I found 400 pieces of brand new 7mm RUM brass on one of my reloading shelves. That's like finding gold bars in your garage these days!

That's great! At that rifles weight I bet it's solid for her and the recoil is minimal.

I took the rifle out today to verify the zero and shoot off the rest of my fireforming loads. These groups are both 5 shots at 100 yards while forming brass from 22-250 cases.

While shooting this group, I actually held off a little bit to make sure that all the bullets were hitting the target. The hole just wasn't getting any bigger!

The next one was just as good.

These were 140 VLDs at a leisurely 2655 with my fireforming load. It will be interesting to see what this gun is really capable of. I don't think the kids will have any excuses if they miss with this rifle! :chuckle:

Let me know if you ever decide to sell that rifle! My daughters will be needing a deer rifle within another year or two. It would work well for antelope in Wyoming as well.
