Burbot skinning and filleting
« on: January 10, 2016, 07:29:41 AM »
I know there are a bunch of bots that made their way home recently and I wanted to share a simple way to skin them. Adf&g has a great video that I was referred to and it worked well, but in my quest to save time  I tried an old trick using cloth gloves. I have several pairs of Kevlar cloth gloves that I keep around for playing ginsu warrior, but cheap cotton glove liners would be just fine too. I make a cut skin deep around the back side of the head and gills and pull a little tab with the pliers that is just big enough to grab with my finger and thumb. I  them pull gently and work the other hand around the fish between the skin and meat if there is any sign of pulling meat. I was able to strip a fish in under a minute without issue.  From there I followed the adf&g guide and it worked very well with next to no waste.

Use a SHARP knife. It's worth starting with a sharp one and staying on top of it.

The cloth glove made the fish that can't be picked up into something that grips like it's made of sand paper. When they pack up the cloth with slime, just rinse them under water, they will clear in short order.

I'm putting a pair on the boat for fish picking.
