Anyone rockfish the North Jetty out of Ilwaco?
« on: January 14, 2016, 08:46:50 PM »
I have really been wanting to get into fishing from shore in the salt. My wife has been bugging me about getting good fish in the freezer and loves rockfish and ling. I read a few articles that say spring seems best for lings but rockfish can be year round good fishing out there. Anyone with first hand experience? I wanted to try that jetty because its the closest drive and I have friends that have a beach house in long beach I can stay at. Any advice on gear, time of year, bait, lures, etc. No secrets needed, just want a decent start and maybe a hint or two.
Thank ya much.

From what I've learned the standard is a 1oz lead head hook with a white curly tail grub.  I usually fish for them in the spring but I know guys that catch them year round.  Get lots of hooks and grubs, you will lose a lot on the rocks.  Cast out, let it sink to the bottom, and retrieve.

Have you thought about trying for surf perch? They're a kick in the pants on light gear.
