Need to rebuild engine on 2009 Suburban
« on: January 28, 2016, 12:41:24 PM »
I just got the call from the dealership and my Suburban is getting oil in the top end.  They said it needs a rebuild or a new engine.  2009 1/2 ton with 126k miles.  Any good recommendations for shop that will perform this at a reasonable rate?

Never heard of a dealership actually rebuilding an engine. It would likely cost more to rebuild than it would to replace, and you wouldn't have the warranty.
Dealership IE Chevy dealership?

The local Chevy dealership replaced pistons and rings in my 5.3 under warranty.
I am guessing your is having the issue from the DOD system? Don't remember what Chevy calls it but 2007.5-2009 were and are notorious for oil blowing past rings on the number 7 cylinder and killing that cylinder due to a crappy design.
What price are they quoting for the rebuild? And have you had any other issues? Spark plugs? Etc?

Where are you located?

Skagit County.  Blade Chevy called about it.  They said I could do a band aide on it for $700 new PVC breather, clean intake and clean plugs.

They quoted $7,000 for the rebuild or $6,800 for a new one.  I haven't had any other issues other than blowing blue smoke on start up and that just started here in December.

Sounds like valve seals.

I'm guessing it also needs the updated oil pan and valve covers to fix the issue with the oil getting into the combustion chamber. Does their quote include these? If not the same thing will happen again.
Might look into a low mileage salvage engine and a reputable shop to do the install.

I went round and round with gm over this issue and it is a known problem to them (if it is in fact caused by the 4 cylinder *censored* down in this case). Assuming it is a 5.3?
Not sure if the 4.8 had the issue or if they did a 6.0 in suburban like that.

In a warranty situation, the manufacturer would require the dealer make the most cost effective repair.

:yeah: in this case there was minimal disassembly and no machining.

I did a ford reman long block motor from Titus Will in Tacoma a few years ago, came with 3/36K warrantee even as I installed myself. not sure if Chevy has same possible program but would very much expect they do. Way cheaper than rebuild if you need lots of parts.. the core charge washed.. Titus has an internet parts department and I believe they are tied to a titus owned Chevy setup same for Olympia.. fyi, the internet sales, which picks up at same counter in store is roughly 30% less than over counter.... they do trany's same same...
