Muzzleloader newbie

Hi Y'all,
Just a post to say HI from a soon to be Muzzleloader hunter.  I've been modern rifle hunting with my Browning Stainless Stalker 30-06 in WA since I moved here in 1989, but it's time to try something new.

I found this forum while researching what ML to buy and really appreciate the wealth of information available here.  I'm involved in other forums on the 'net and know that a well run forum is "The place" to go for great information sharing.

I'm currently thinking that the Knight Disc Extreme NW version is what I want, but this must be a bad time of year to shop because there doesn't seem to be many available.  And I was really disappointed to see that prices appear to have really shot up on that gun based on what I saw on muzzle-loaders.com compared to Sportsmans Warehouse or from Knightrifles.  I guess if you want to play, you got to pay.....

Not sure if this will work, but I'm attaching a photo of me and last years Whitetail harvest.  I'm sure my new smoke pole will work just as good as long as my old eyes will cooperate.

The DISC is a very good rifle.... If you can find a Sportsman with one in stock you can still get last years prices... There is one in Lewiston, ID - I looked at ti the other day...

Knight has not set next years prices yet and Sportsman has not requested a quote for 2016 riles.  The more they buy the more the price comes down...

Think the Sportsman in Spokane has one also...

Thanks for the tips, but those are a little too far away to drive unless they were giving them away free.    I better get off my butt and check out the local Sportsmans stores near me on the WET side of the mountains before they run out.  Plus I want to have lots of time to play with the new toy before hunting season rolls around.  I handload rifle and pistol cartridges and am looking forward to load development with a smoke pole.

Good looking buck, like you I've committed to figuring out this smokepole this thing year, I've got a Knight Bighorn with the thumbhole stock, looking forward to getting it all dialed in this year.

No I was thinking you could call them and work a deal sot that they can pack it up and send it to you or your local Sportsmans

You should really know ML shooting and hunting is a rea disease and it grows on you in a hurry!

don't know what they have in stock... but sense your getting into muzzy's... check out the muzzleloader shop on river road.. on the corner across from the bridge to levy road.. all they do is muzzies.. so they know a lot more to help ya then the box stores...

The knight discs are even out of stock  on muzzle-loaders.com - maybe Sportmans Warehouse in Federal Way? Cabelas or Bass Pro? I would toss in the CVA Optima or Accura V2s Northwest in your search. https://www.muzzle-loaders.com/cva-accura-v2-nitride-northwest-pr3127n.html just as an option to check out. Good luck and keep us posted on the route you take.

Thanks for all the tips. 

I called around yesterday and found a Knight Disc Extreme at the Sportsmans Warehouse in Puyallup for $499.  Woo Hoo!    It already had its first brush with wet weather because it was strapped to the back of my motorcycle for the ride home and the clouds were threatening.  But the "Seattle Sunshine" held off until after I made it home. 

Some thoughts on the gun:

This sucker is Heavy compared to my normal '06 hunting rifle!  I'll definitely want to get a sling to haul it around (and of course to increase accuracy when shooting).

The thumbhole stock will take some retraining.  Just playing with the gun in the store, I found myself wanting to grab the stock with my thumb over the top and this doesn't work very well.  I'll have plenty of time to practice before that quick shot on that trophy buck this fall.

I'm excited about shooting it, but first I need to gather supplies........

I bought the same rifle after this past year's muzzle loader elk season.  I love it.  The thumbhole stock really dampens recoil.  I added a peep sight because I shoot those much better than standard irons.

You will get used the thumb hole stock really fast. And you will really like it.
I have a Bighorn and love it. Barnes bullets are awesome.

Congrats on the purchase of the Knight. For old eyes check out a Williams rear peep sight if that forward sight becomes hard to align with the end bead. Made a difference for me acquiring a target and hitting that target with confidence.

I've heard good things about that sight.  I'm gonna try some 100 yard shots and see how my eyes do, but I'll probably end up going that route.  I've been spoiled with a lifetime of hunting with a scoped rifle, so the peep is probably as close to that as I can get and still be legal here in WA.

Congrats on the new muzzleloader purchase! The Knight's are extremely accurate and reliable, and I believe that gun will be good to your for many years to come. If you need a Williams peep sight, please let me know, as we are a full distributor of all Williams sights. Just a suggestion.... but if you install a Williams FP on the rear scope mount and then install a Williams Streamlined ramp with a fiber optic front sight  - then put a fiber optic hood on the rifle it appears when you look down through you are shooting a 1X scope...

If you do decide to go with the FP on you DExtreme you will probably have to do a very modification on it to get the bolt handle to clears - really easy. You can see the bit of filing needed in this picture
