 I've got a buddy whos going to Puerto Vallarta in May, he asked me if i knew any good fishing guides but ive never been there, so i figured i would ask you guys? Good or bad experiences?

Cascaras Fly.  Not sure on the spelling but it is a guy and his old man father.  They were at the main fishing marina.  Fishing out of a panga boat and take you to blue water if you want.  They really know what they are doing.  I wouldn't go out of a big boat.  They are too expensive and the panga can get it done there.  Not much english but you don't need much to drink beer and fish...

I just rented a kyak... rowed out past the breakers (about 70-200 yards off shore)... at trolled a Rapala with a small white feathered jig as a trailer. I caught 3 Rooster Fish... the largest one was about 15 pounds, a couple of Baracuda in the 5-10 pound class, and I even caught a couple of Yellow Fin jacks (4-12 pounds)... those things are a kick! All told I think in 4 mornings of fishing I hooked at least 20 total fish... it was awesome... and it cost me like $20 a day. It's a trip fighting a fish from a kyak... the fish has no where to go.

I took my 9' medium heavy Berkley air-light rod and a 201 Curado spooled with 12# Maxima... I never felt undergunned... even when the yellow fin decided to head for California. I didn't want to take any of my expensive stuff... and I figured if I could handle an irate Chum in the Nisqually... I could handle a 10 pound fish out where there's no logs, snags, gnarly current, 700 other fishermen, etc. Plus, if you go down there and try to rent gear, or use what's on the boat... don't count on using anything decent... unless you pay a couple hundred bucks to go out.

When I went out it was mostly a Dorado show.  Here was one I got.  The old man told me in the summer they go out at night and drift fish for tuna up to 200 lbs...

I wish I could have gone out in the blue water... but it just wasn't in the cards. $$$ and time are always a factor... even on vacation.

Nice fish Pope! Your hat sucks though I have a buddy leaving today for Costa Rica going for Sail fish, Marlin and Roosters. I guess they catch dorados too. His bro in law has a few bucks and owns his own high end charter company down there. This will be his first trip, next time he said he'll invite me along. Sounds like a blast. Ive never fished in PV. Another buddy of mines parents live there. His dad caught some huge marlin in a derby two years ago and won. He was just south of PV in Mismaloya.

I still think Cabo and a few other places are better.  Blue water isn't too far though past the bay.  I'd like to go during the summer time when the fishing is good.  I've also had a Costa Rica trip planned but had to put it on hold because of my wife's employment situation.  Sails everywhere in Costa...  Me personally, I would catch a nice yellowfin tuna the first day and eat it every day the rest of the trip.  I love that stuff.

Yeah my buddy was saying when they catch a yellow fin, they bring it back to the local sushi bar. The chef makes sashimi and all then buys whatever is left for some pretty good coin.

nice dorado pope, what  time of the year were you there?

I was there in March.  Kind of the low time for fishing but good nonetheless.  I brought it back and the local restaurant traded me a couple meals of it and they kept the other half.  Good deal if you ask me. 

By the way, there is nothing like having huevos rancheros on the beach in the morning with a corona...
