Feral hogs in Grant Co

A 2 sq mile area of winchester wasteway is off limits for a month while the game dept finishes the eradication.

Wish them luck..... USDA aircraft involved.

Sooner or later.. it was going to happen, I dont think they can get them all.

Cover too thick.
I dont believe we could eradicate the population due to the area they are in.

Even using a helicopter I'm not that confident. Tule tubers and taters. Water and cover.

Because it has been tried and has not worked.  Look at states with hog problems.

There is a huge hog farm right in that area, Probably escaped from there .

Valid point but why not give some hunters a couple weeks or a month then bring in the hired guns

The Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife (WDFW) is  assisting USDA Wildlife Services with feral swine eradication efforts by closing a small portion (1343 acres; approx. 2 square miles) of the Desert Wildlife Unit starting tomorrow, Feb. 23 and running for about a month.

A closure is needed to reduce human disturbance to observe reliable pig activity patterns and to provide public safety while the last remaining individuals are removed.  USDA-WS aircraft for this work just became available without advance warning, so that’s why this notice is so late.

Basically the closure is north of Winchester Wasteway, east of Dodson Road and south of private land to the north. Look for a map in the Hunting and Fishing report on Friday.

count me in !  i luvs to hunt hogs and have from california to florida to south africa and zimbabwe.

BUT

  the real reason the game dept won't give hunters a chance is because the problem will spread.  there are a few will who take the unlimited  hunting possibilities and actually "spread" the problem.   future pig hunters will buy and transport pigs to their favorite hunting grounds and release them.  where unlimited hog hunting has been introduced for eradication purposes pigs have expanded their range.  classic case of hunters screwing themselves.

Wild pigs are a huge problem in the south I get it, we don't want them here. 

However I find it....funny for a lack of better words that we get the USDA air force and snipers to take out pigs before they ruin sand and sage brush, but we roll the red carpet out for wolves to eat a ruin everything they encounter.

I am not to far from there, had no idea that there was a hog problem...I'd go looking for fresh pork if I had knew before the closure!!
I have fought some fires in the closed are, lots of cattails, and thick brush. Wait for the fire to burn to where you can make a stand and put it out kind of deal. Way to thick, swampy, sandy, and hills/dunes to attack. Its gonna be a challenge getting all the hogs in there. Airborne may be the best option.

Me either!  This is the first I've heard of a pig problem here...I would have loved to bagged me some bacon!

2 years ago I tried telling people feral hogs were already in southern WA but nobody believed me.

Saw a pig a few years ago just a mile or 2 from there....didn't know if I could shoot it or not here...is it legal to shoot a feral hog here?

i believe feral hogs/pigs are considered "unclassified wildlife" in WA and therefore are not subject to game regs...attempting to come up with the exact passage...just an FYI i've seen feral hogs on trail cam pics on the Olympic Penninsula just last summer

It would be totally out of character for fish and wolves too say have at them!
They will study, analyze, and regulate until it's a real problem!

Pigs are an invasive species.

Wolves are naturally repopulating their historic range.

Plus, wolves are cute and cuddly.
