Backcountry Hunters and Anglers

I'm in agreement with dreamnelk.  I was interested in BHA in the past.  But they were part of the coalition really pushing the Wild Olympics Campaign--including the original proposal.  Ack.  I could at least understand backing the revised proposals (not that I liked them either), but the original would've taken lots of FS land that is open and accessible to hunters now and transferred it to the national park as actual park.  One of the revised proposals gave the land to the park, but under reserve status still allowing hunting but managed by the park.  Just shocked that 'hunters' would back the original...figured it was more the backcountry anglers outweighing the hunters.  Kind of left a bad taste to me, they now get filed in the same folder as Conservation NW.

I agree that they haven't always fought causes that I think they should, however that percentage is small in comparison to the causes they do jump down into the trenches on. But pick a group, and the same is true. The point is that  organizations like BHA, RMEF, MDF, and the list goes on. Are doing good work both on the ground and in politics. And one shoe doesn't fit all of us, however get behind one or several donate your time and dollars. Make as big a difference as you can. I for one chose to support BHA and a few others.

And that's a good thing!

Don't head to Vegas anytime soon?    I believe that would be a lay bet!  BHA has many similarities to CNW.

They are completely and fundamentally different.  Ask all the folks out of Roseburg Oregon that now get to DRIVE around on over 200 roads that were once gated.  They aren't anti roads/atv, they are anti ILLEGAL ORV use.  BIG difference

At first glance on their web site, the group appears to be anti ORV. 
After looking further into some of the reads, it's obvious that is not the case at all.  Just promoting legal and ethical use.  Which I fully support.

I will recant the second half of my statement for now.  They sound very similar to CNW pitch when discussing Grizzly recovery, very similar.

For all those interested in BHA I strongly encourage you to do your research, check them out. The 5th annual rendezvous is April 1-3 in Missoula MT. If it's anything like last years it's an awesome event. Get tickets, go meet people, ask questions. It's a great group of people. Apparently they are not for everyone, Such is life. I wish everyone luck on their tag draws and upcoming 2016 season. I for one will be out on public land on April 15 chasing bears with my boy. As he was lucky enough to draw Bear river. Good times ahead

Unfortunately not this year. Really wanted to go and meet Steve. Got to meet Randy last year which was cool. But work seems to think I need to be here this year. Good luck on the contest! Would love to try it, haven't had cougar since I was a kid. From what I remember it was delicious. Keep a tag in my pocket each year for one. But haven't had an opportunity yet.

Tagging for later. If you listen to Randy Newburg he discusses his dealing with wolf and grizzly recovery and how he will not support any recover programs as the ESA is currently rewritten and implemented. I would be hard pressed to believe he would support BHA if they were pushing for more recovery.... like I said tagging for later when I have time to read through everything...




I'm a member of BHA. If someone is needing a carpool dummy and roommate for the rendezvous let me know. would love to go.

I am a BHA member.  Hoping to chat with Ty Stubblefield in the next couple days about getting involved somehow. 

I will add this to the ongoing debate over the causes supported by BHA (and for that matter CNW):

You can disagree with them all you want...if you're a MEMBER.  If you're not a member you can not change one thing about what they do, what they support or how they operate.  Instead, just become a member, get involved, make your case and help steer things in the direction that is important to you. Every voice counts.
