Kelly Hill GMU 105 spring bear info appreciated
« on: March 28, 2016, 12:38:47 PM »
So yeah, I'm one of those guys who drew an area he never hunted.  I'm not a bit afraid to go there blind, I've wanted to hunt there for years, and know a bit about the habits of spring bears.  However, I'd be grateful for any insights, experience or other input from hunters who do have experience in The Wedge, feel free to answer in this post or PM me.

I will only get about 6 days to hunt, spread across three weekends.  I've picked out some good looking south-facing slopes on public ground to glass and search for bears feeding on grass and bulbs.  I'll eat my tag happily before shooting a sow with cubs, other than that any adult bear is going down if I get the opportunity.

Good luck to all hunting this spring.

As long as we have the habitat, we can argue forever about who gets to kill what and when.  No habitat = no game.

A buddy and I also drew that tag and wont be in there till later in the season. A lot of that area is private timber company that you can buy a access pass and the local gas station. Good luck

I've been involved on spring bear hunts in 105 3 of the last 4 years And finally drew it this year. I don't remember running into another bear hunter while in there but all were short trips and the # tags are double now what they were.  there is some Grizz that ventures into the unit supposedly so make sure to identify that big cinnamon bear before you drop the hammer! Happy hunting

I appreciate all the responses.  I managed to squeak it out to 4 weekends, so my odds of success improved by a third!  I've been looking for timber company pass contact info so appreciate knowing they can be purchased locally.  I also appreciate the tip about the grizzlies, I know they are a possibility there and I'll darned sure make sure I don't shoot one!

I'll be in a white 2009 crew cab Ram 1500, unremarkable except for the rock rash on the rocker panels and behind the rear tires.  Flag me down if you see me.

Also, remember COUGAR is OPEN in 105 through April 30 (or until quota is filled http://wdfw.wa.gov/hunting/cougar/), so be sure to have a 2016 cougar tag in your pocket!

yeah we're going to brake out the stick and sting this time. They seem to be a little easier to get close to in the spring.

There are Grizzly bears in the unit, The paper company had gated off the area last year and not sure what the access is now Some of it can be a long walk.

Hunted in Unit 105 since I was 12. Lots of IEP(Inland Empire Paper) land to hunt up there and a high population of black bear as it is very close to the Canadian Border. In my opinion it is one of the best bear hunting units in the U.S. I have seen 2 grizz in that unit in 21 years, so as others have mentioned be sure to identify your target. About 25% colored phased bear in that unit. They use to run hounds like crazy right down the highway at Sheep Creek. Tons of BIG WHITETAIL BUCKS as well, and Elk if you know where to find them. You can download a map off of IEP's website that will show you timber company/private borders. Bring a turkey tag, and a shotgun for the mid day, and head by the river. Good luck, it is a blast up in Kelly Hill.
