Bad Moose Unit?

With 14 points I'm finally ready to start putting in for moose, sheep and goat for real this year.  I'm trying to get some scouting in before the permit application deadline but I'm wondering if there's some units for moose to stay away from (low numbers, bad access, etc.).

You've got 14 points for each but have never applied for a hunt? You applied just for points I assume? If so, you sure missed out on a lot of opportunity to draw. Your odds are still extremely low. I wouldn't bother scouting until you draw. For moose there's only one that has poor access and I'd recommend not applying for it, and that's Hangman. Other than that, they're all good, just apply for the season you prefer.

Hangman can be tuff if you are not from the area.  But if you have the time to get permission to go through some of the private gates  .

Huckelberry is NO GOOD don't waste your points, but when I draw it, I will post a pic or 10.

I know but it just seemed like there was never time enough to scout or even hunt that far from home (Longview/Castle Rock) until this year.  Thanks for the tip on Hangman.  I'm going to use our family vacation this year to spend some time scouting 45 Degrees North and Parker Lake.

As far I'm concerned you should always being choosing a unit to hunt each year. You never know when you will draw.  I drew my moose tag with 16 points, but drew my mountain goat the first year I applied.

I had an awesome experience hunting moose this year on a late season hunt.  I purposely skipped a couple of well known units because the draw odds were so bad. I passed on hangman because of access issues.
I chose a unit I had never been in.  I did a 3 day scout trip in early October and hunted 12 days in nov and had an awesome hunt.  Could have shot either of the pair of paddle bulls on day 1 but wanted a mature bull.
I think a guy can have pretty much have the hunt they want in almost any of the units.   Meat, mature or giant bull.  It all comes down to what you want, and how hard you hunt for them..

Hangman seems to have fallen off the cliff, it was a fantastic hunt when I drew it in 08, I know for the next three or four years it was pretty good but recent reports have been very negative to say the least.

With so many wolves in the Northeast I would focus on sheep or goat.... 



In all seriousness with 1-100 points good luck to all. Almost every permit in WA is worth drawing an OIL.

You have just a hair better than zero chance of drawing you know?  Certainly no better than 1 outa a hundred.  Just put in and pray. 14 points is just a hair better than average. Good luck.

I just found this forum recently after hearing Jason Phelps on the Meateater Podcast.  Seems like a good bunch of folks.

As for my odds of drawing a tag this year; I'm working on a "good luck dance" (similar to the Funky Chicken) that I will perform while entering my hunt choices.     That should do it.

Reminds me of a couple years ago my uncle gave my number to his coworker. He called and asked questions on moose units. I gave my opinion thinking "this dude is all gung ho only to be let down" well he called me back in July and he and his partner drew! Everyone has a chance!
