The fur shed
« on: April 08, 2016, 10:12:57 PM »
I sure love this quarters articles in the fur shed! A big thanks to everyone who puts in there time to produce it. One article stuck out to me like crazy though. Snake oil? Micheal actually made mention in the article "placing several drops in the cage trap entrance...." IV heard of fluke catches of a yearling pup in a cage trap before. But has anyone had any true success in cage trapping coyotes? I'm talking full grown adults, pack leaders. If it could be done, with our regulations here I think a new way of yote trapping could be pioneered! What's everyone's take on the subject of fooling a Wiley old fawn grabber in the cage trap?

If I was going to try, I'd do a very large double door cage (with conibear triggers, no pan) that's extra padded on the floor; very well disguised & blended into where it's placed. Live bait (visual and sound attractors inside the cages). Be right on top of them and find a nice game trail within the brush that you can jam the live baited double door cage into and hopefully get one....?  :dunno:

Lots of time and work. Don't know if it's even worth it

With thirty (30+) years in the ADC Business Field of managing animal damage and another ten (10+) years in fur trapping (40+) I have just about caught everything.  I can tell you this; coyotes are real hard to get in a live cage trap, I know, I have tried.  I have caught two coyotes one in a Hancock trap and one in a raccoon size 10"x12"x32" trap both by accident.  I caught one two blocks from the Children's Hospital in Seattle in 1991.  That one made the front page of the Seattle Times.

I know quite a few Businesses across the country that have tried just as hard as myself and have the same success.  I know of a Business down in Colorado that had a year contract to trap coyotes and only captured six coyotes with cage traps, not good with a 24 hour trap check time frame.  You will catch one every now and then if you're after them but you will not get them in numbers.  The only way you will get them in numbers is using foot-holds and snare.  The bad thing about this state is that we cannot use either unless it is thought the permit process.  Remember once you get the permit for "damage control" you have to throw away that coyote that you just caught or you can use (tan it) for your own personal use.

I still trap for quite a few Ranchers that have problems with coyotes killing their calves and lambs.   This lure that is in the Fur Shed sounds good and should be tried by you guys if you have the coyotes and the time to make it.  Snakes are on the coyotes menu along with other meats.

this was my first time hearing of snake oil I had seen beaver tail oil before. If I had caught any beaver this season I was planning on making up a batch to use for cat lure. My thoughts on coyota trapping was maybe a Texas style pig trap. You guys seen those giant drop down cages for nuisance hogs? I think they could work for coyote well although I'm sure they are very spendy

Well I really love what  John has done with the paper  only they're not coming fast enough. Freds life story of trapping really hits home .I tried Bruce's  clam sauce  w/noodles, after clam digging all weekend. My wife would not eat razor clams prior but now she says when's the next dig! It was amazing Bruce
