Snake hunting info needed
« on: April 20, 2016, 02:39:19 PM »
Hello all been awhile since I been on couldn't find my old login info so have different username now. I am looking for the best place to find rattlers for a Friday and Saturday hunt. On State land so I can stay in a tent those nights. What's the best time of year to go. Thinuking maybe mid June?

There are tons of them in the Sinlahekin Valley.  There is a "Blue Lake" there, but not sure if it's the same.

Any rocky canyon roads... May and June during the warm day, cool night time.

Below is a graphic of how I hunted snakes in high school

Kindly do not attempt to cloud the issue with too many facts.

Find some rocky areas then drop a bomb, snake hunting complete.  :chuckle:

Lower Crab Creek area has a ton of them. We killed and ate four of them last weekend and tanned the skins. Not too much meat on them but the skins came out great. We probably saw 50 or 60 snakes over the course of the weekend.

Got one more question for anyone who has done this before. I'll be about 4 hours from home and will be staying the night over there. What is the best way to keep the snake skins from rotting before I get home to tan them? Skin and put on ice? Or leave whole (minus the head obviously) and skin at home?

Bring a big piece of cardboard and skin them then stick on the cardboard. They will dry within a day or so and be as crisp as a dollar bill when you peal them off.

I usually take a half a dozen pint jars with a brine in them. Skin the snakes roll them up and pop them in the jar. Screw lid on and store. Rinse them off when I get home and pin them on a board.

My advice would be to find a rocky public trail in Eastern Washington near water access and then bring a handgun with shotshell or glaser. Take a long walking stick as well.

You could also get on a hiker or ATV forum and ask around. ATVs cover a lot of ground and come across nests that they want cleared.
