Lawrance Hook 4 or 5
« on: April 18, 2016, 09:47:07 AM »
Anyone use this fishfinder? I was playing with them at Sportsmens yesterday. The 4 has all the features the 5 does, just a smaller screen and $100 cheaper. Not sure if the larger screen is worth the $100, the 4 screen will be a little bigger than what I have now. $50 rebate on them until July. I like how easy they are to run. I have been wanting to upgrade for a while now, did not want a complicated unit. These have GPS, and accept the navigation chips. I'm pretty sold on one, just wondered if anyone has any first hand experience.

I guess where I'm at is.....is the bigger screen worth the $100? Am I gonna have enough juice after a days fishing to start my main after running one of these on my starter battery all day? Never had a battery issue with my current entry level Lawerance...but never know, thought I'd throw that out there. They should not use any more power that the one I have?

if you buy one there is a support dvd by Dr Sonar that i would recommend to help learn it all. It helps get the most out of a nice piece of equipment

I bought the hook 5.  I am positive the bigger screen is worth the 100!
It works awsome though.

I have a Helix 9 and think for screen size the bigger the better.  I'm done with little screens.

I haven't used that series of lawrance fish finders.  But I do have a hds 8 and want to add another hds 10 to my boat.  I'm a definite believer in the larger sceens.

contrary to what my wife says, size matters.  :chuckle: Im guessing since it takes the map chip then you will need to use the split screen so I would get the biggest screen in your budget

To me it depends on the application. If you have say a little tiller type row boat and the unit is mounted on opposite side of the boat from where you are sitting and you do everything from that 1 spot all day you can get away with a smaller screen because your eyes are never more than a couple feel away from the screen. Whereas on a larger boat with remote steering with a unit on the dash you will want as large of a screen as possible so you can see it easily when you are in back messing with your lines, operating down riggers and such.
That being said, I look at it like a TV screen, bigger is better so get as big of a screen as you can get/afford.
