Backpacking water filter

I've been looking for a new water filter for backpack l. I need Somthjng light weight and compact. Does anyone have any suggestions? I've been using the katadyn filters for years and it still works great.  Just need something more compact

Your taking a filter to fill up say water bottles & camp water not just one to drink out of the stream with? Check REI and see the reviews is my suggestion

Correct.  I'm not looking for a straw style filter. I've looked at rei but can't convince the wife that spending )100+ on a filter is worth it

Check out the Sawyer line. Use the Sawyer mini which is around $25. Easy to use.

These are the best IMO. We've had one in the family for 15 years. I wouldn't buy anything else. My friends have different filters and they felt cheap. This one is made to last. Pump incredibly fast and you can pump out of a mud puddle. You just scrub the outside of the filter every few sessions with a scotch brite and it never slows down.

Ill second the steri pen! Ultra light, fast, and effective! I also have an MSR mini0works filter that is great! If you're really concerned filter then steripen but honestly I just use the steripen for the past 3 years and its been fantastic.

i like the steri pen too, the problem with the inline filters like the sawyer is if they freeze their toast.

Like has been said already, filters fail.  They freeze, or they are poorly maintained.  For most mountain stuff it's a combination of steri pen and aquamira drops.  If I'm somewhere that heavy sediment is a concern I'll bring the filter.

I sold my Steripen because I didnt like worrying about another item that needs batteries and it does NOT remove particles and organisms. It kills them yes. The Sawyer filter in a membrane that actually removes particles and harmful organisms. Keep it in your pack with your clothes or in your sleeping bag/quilt and you don't need to worry about freezing.

  You still need to be diligent about maintenance, otherwise some really interesting stuff will start growing in that bad boy.
