best Westside elk unit
« on: June 11, 2016, 12:46:22 PM »
What size bull is realistic to get with the Westside incentive tag? I am looking into the white river and toutle units but sounds like the trophy quality isn't the best. Can pretty much hunt any open season in pretty much all units. Nooksack is not open with this tag.

Toutle is a waist. I promise you that. If you are considering this unit once again take the deer tag.

Cannot hunt kapowsin even with the incentive tag, you can hunt mashel, but not anything that lies in the kapowsin boundaries. I'd say white river you'll have to put time into which is good if your ok hiking deep, maybe check out south rainier etc. Down there.

I wouldn't pick the toutle either but a guy could still kill a 300 in there with that tag.

You can probably kill a 300 inch bull in most Westside units

i have done a ton of elk hunting but it has all been eastern wa and idaho. i am looking for a area that i can get off roads and bivy hunt. i do not have a timber company pass and would rather hunt public land. any other suggestions for units to look into for quality bulls?

You might look into Lewis River, Packwood, or South Rainier. You could even consider hiring an outfitter to pack you in. Try contacting White Pass Outfitters.

If you are looking for a Rosie, I would say Quinault.
Some really nice park bulls in mid to late sep.

What are you looking for? That's an incredible tag that can take you on an adventure of a lifetime.  If it were mine I would start with Quinault  (true Roosevelt) and move to the crest.  The crest will offer higher number of 300+ inch bulls but there is not much that compares to the massive Rosies. Toutle, Margaret, monument, etc will all have an occasional giant but I would hedge my bets elsewhere.  :twocents:

Well thats sucks. I used to live a mile from Kapwsion 16 years ago and saw monster bulls quite a bit behind the gates.

With that tag he'd definitely get a bull in that area camp but very few bulls live long in the sw.
