Woodpecker distress call. . .
« on: February 03, 2009, 10:02:20 PM »
Is it possible to make a woodpecker distress call on a generic predator call. . .

. . .i.e. I have an open reed distress/howler  (Primos Lil' Dog and the Hot Dog) and a closed reed distress/Ki-Yi/high-pitched howler. . .I'd like to add the ability to do a woodpecker call to my repetoire but I'd rather not add another call to my lanyard. . .

. . .but you gotta do what you gotta do. . .just curious if I can do it with what I have. . .if I can could someone tell me how. . .they say that I can do bird twitters with the open reed call, but it doesn't work very well when you get that far down the reed. . .that Ki-Yi might do it when I remove the trumpet mouthpiece, but I haven't tried yet because the reed on it is so small

If you can roll your tongue, you can sound like a woodpecker on an open reed. "RRRRuffles have rrrrridges" if you remember that commercial, you know what I mean.  (And you are also getting old, LOL!)  I use a "syco tweety", but I think you can do it with any narrow reed open reed call.
Work to live, don't live to work.

You can educate away ignorance, sober up drunkenness, but you can't fix stupid.

Ricks open reed calls are really easy to blow and make good bird sounds.

It is easier for me to kind of gargle rather than rolling my tongue continuously.  I can do it louder and with more emotion, than rolling the tongue as well.  Try to imagine that you are growling while playing tug of war with your dog, than do that while biting the tip of the reed.
Dreams are forever on the mind, realization in the hands.

That actually makes sense. . .the last bit about growling and playing tug of war with my dog definitely helped!!!

Thanks. . .I'm gonna give it a try. . .can't hurt right. . .

I'm glad it made sense to at least one person, because after I wrote it I thought it sounded like I had been drinking all night.

You mentioned your closed reed kiyi, just so you know you can take of the mouth piece and use it as a open reed. I use mine this way and am very happy with the sounds it produces.

I use it with the mouthpiece taken off as a high pitched howler and yelper. . .or at least I've practiced yelps. . .I haven't had the occasion to use a yelp yet. . .

I tried the rolled tongue and it works VERY well at making bird twitters!!!. . .it's a little loud. . .to my ears anyway, but much more effective than what the instructions suggested. . .but it does wear my tongue at pretty fast. . .guess it's gonna have to get some exercise

. . .I also tried the growling. . .with this I can sound like a crow (even though I already have a crow call it's good to know). . .I'm gonna listen to some woodpecker distress and see if I can mimic it
