Collared Cougars

So I checked my game camera on Sunday and got a nice little surprise on it.  I thought I would share it.  Anyone know much about cougars that are collared?  Can you shoot them?

No law against shooting marked animals during a legal hunting season.  Most hunters would not even notice the collar until it was down.

  Looks like a female with last years kitten, no law against shooting a collared cat, but shooting a big tom would be one worth mounting, a friend shot a big male that was collared a few years ago that had a collar and tag attached stating don't consume the meat as it had just been collared.

When I shot my cat a couple years ago I found out it had a collar that was put on by the skokomish tribe. My buddy knew one of the guys who had collared the cat so we met up with him and gave the collar back. I guess they are pretty expensive so if you do shoot on with a collar I'm sure they would like to get them back. I contacted wdfw as far as the meat was concerned. They told me that it was safe to eat. I guess the tranquilizer they use needs a certain amount of time to work it's way out of their system. If it's not out of their system it makes the meat unsafe to eat.

It is illegal to kill spotted kittens or cougars accompanied by spotted kittens.  That cougar is off limits for a while until the little one grows up

I can make out some extremely faint spots on that cat.  I doubt you would notice them in real time while hunting.

It would fall on the older side of being a kitten.  Many would call it a juvenile.  Mostly some baring in the picture.

I shot a collared/ear tagged Cow Elk a few years ago. WDFW has an online system where you punch in the tag number, and it tells you when it was tagged and the "safe to eat" date. Like was mentioned, it needs a certain amount of time to work out of their system.
