I've had good luck with ExOfficio boxers, loose seems to be better for me. But that material is amazing. I only took 2 pairs with me for 2 weeks in Africa. A quick rinse in water and they are like new.
what in the wild wild world of sports???

I really like the UA synthetics if it is dry and cool.  Otherwise, I'm pretty happy with the Champion boxer briefs, they will give ample warning before the crotch holes - just pitch them when the small holes start to appear along the seams.  I will second the meat grinder effect of the UA synthetics if soaking wet!
As long as we have the habitat, we can argue forever about who gets to kill what and when.  No habitat = no game.

There are quite a few other merino wool brands marketed for back packing. If the 2 types I orderd last night don't fit my high expectations, I will move onto them. Think I will steer clear of first lite for now & try the Patagonia next.

I like the first lite.  I have 2 pair, and wore them all of hunting season last year 27 + days of hiking and downhill skied in them 20+ days and no holes.  I find with a lot of merino, if you buy them in a size that is too snug in the fit they will break down quicker than if they are slightly looser fit.  I am going to be trying other brands this year as well, as I assume the First lite life span should be starting to come to an end sometime this fall.

My favorite so far for hunting are the Sitka merino boxer briefs. They are long (almost down to my knees) and are very comfortable and durable for me. I am going to try some of the silk weight synthetic ones this year.

I'm a fan of the Ibex boxer briefs...once I'm where I want to be hunting in the backcountry.

For the initial long bomb in-fill, I'll typically wear the aforementioned Champion underwear if pants are warranted, or a pair of ultra-light running shorts if the weather is hot.  Once at base camp, everything gets washed up and hung out to dry for the eventual long grind out or for wearing at night.  Anything to keep the "schweaty" at bay.   :chuckle:  If things get ugly and I'm staring at a monster ruck full of meat and gear and trying to figure out how to get rid of a few ounces, the cheap Champions are the first one-way items to bite the dust in the campfire.

The Ibex are a tad pricey for sure, but really hold up well, are very comfortable with no stink at all after a week of spiking out.  The waistline on the pair I have are very flat and ride higher than the pack's waist belt. Nice feature that helps keep it from feeling like the waist belt is trying to chew a hole in my hips.  They are plenty long to keep the inner thigh chafing at bay, but I wish they were a tad longer in the thigh like the First Lites.  Nothing a little body glide won't fix.

Really like these

Yup.
Same length as biking shorts.
No chafing.
They could breathe a bit better but I wear them on long hunts and no complaints.
