$15 a meal is a hell of a lot more than this cowboy is going to spend on a freeze dried meal. I only eat one MH a day in the field so I don't care if it's got a few preservatives. People really over estimate the preservatives in MH meals anyway. There isn't any voodoo involved. It's healthier than 90% of prepared foods (round number) and I can get a Mexican Style rice and chicken, throw in a Sriracha packet and some pepper, I'm good for the night and I don't have to cook or wait half an hour
I've got no problem with MH. I'm one of the lucky ones I guess and they don't mess with my stomach. I eat pretty healthy most of the year so a week or two out of 52 eating MH is alright with me.. Everyday at the hospital I grab a few packs of red peppers and tobasco; Makes any meal much more enjoyable.. Backcountry hunting is already expensive enough. And 20-30 min to wait to eat?! NOPE! I'm in bed 30 min after I'm back to camp at night (sometimes I can't even wait that long). I listened to Heather on the Gritty Bowman podcast and I understand the costs associated with doing this and it's nice to have more options, but I'm gonna stick with the Ol standby for now..
It's going to be strictly simple stuff! When I'm on the mountain, it's macronutrients and flavor. 3 questions before buying a backpacking meal1) how does it taste?2) how long does it take?3) how much protein does it have?
Still not enough choices. A guy needs variety on a two week hunt

I think I ended up paying a little over 5 bucks per meal, so about the same as MH from Costco. I think they are a little better, and certainly give you some variety outside of the MH options.
If you have enough energy to be picky you are not hunting hard enough...
