Model 70 .300Mag
« on: July 27, 2016, 08:41:28 AM »
I have a Winchester Model 70 that was made in 1941 and the caliber stamped on the barrel is .300Mag.  A .300 WinMag cartridge will not fit this rifle but a .300H&H will. In addition I have some brass that is stamped .300Mag and it will also fit. I am going to be selling the rifle and want to be able to explain this. Was the .300Mag caliber a precursor to the .300H&H? Do they even make .300 Mag ammo anymore?
Any thoughts would be appreciated.

Pre 64 Mod 70's were offered in .300H&H. That said is the stamping factory?

If it's a factory barrel and stock and the rifle is in good shape, it could be worth quite a bit. Pre-64 Mod 70's can be worth a fortune.

I think .300 H&H was the first of the .30 magnums.  I know it was pre-WWI for colonial Africa.  .300 Win Mag and .300 Norma mag weren't until the 60's.  So, probably the H&H was the only one at the time so no confusion.

does the 300 mag brass resemble 300 H&H?  Likely the chamber is 300 H&H, but a chamber cast would tell for sure.  I second Jay.sharkbait, check the condition and value BEFORE you sell it!  Pre-64's in 300 H&H are highly desirable.

It should be a 300 H&H I've seen a few.  They are usually marked 300 Mag, and that's it.   Be a heck of a nice gun.

I have a 1951 Model 70 in 300 H&H that was my great uncle's old moose gun. I love it almost enough to buy a second! Absolute tack driver. (it is stamped 300 H&H though)
