Yakima North Youth cow tag
« on: August 07, 2016, 10:02:18 PM »
Grandson got picked for the Yakima north mod. firearm youth hunt in first week of Nov. This will be his first elk hunt and we know nothing of the area. It includes GMU's 336; 340; 342 & 346. Would anyone be willing to give us some ideas of where to start researching and scouting as it is a pretty big area. He will hunt the general season and if no luck then he will continue to hunt for a cow elk from Nov. 2nd to the 13th.

We plan on getting familiar with as much of the area as possible starting next week when time permits.

That should be a fun hunt!

Those are some really good GMUs for elk.

I'll try to remember to PM you some thoughts.    If you don't see anything from me in the next couple days, shot me a PM.

My son has the muzzy cow tag for Yakima north.  If the snow isn't flying yet I may have some areas to check out.  How mobile is your grandson?  Some of the areas we've been scouting are pretty steep and deep.

I had a cow tag over there last year and filled it on the second day. There is no reason to go "steep and deep" for a cow tag in those units the first week of November.  :twocents:

Chet- I will PM you my thoughts.

to treeclimber2852 my grandson is 15 and pretty mobile in fact as far as mobility goes I am the one that's not real mobile and not sure yet about his dad as it's been several years since he has hunted or hiked in the tall timber areas.

If it were me, I still hunt general season but my main focus would be on the week after the season.  The elk will settle down pretty quickly after man leaves the woods and will get back to feeding on south/southwest slopes in the mornings and evenings.  If there is any weather that comes in those cows start migrating like crazy for lower elevations and won't be hard to find.  Last year there were groups in the dozens heading for sage country because of that little bit of early snow.
It is foolish and wrong to mourn these men.  Rather, we should thank god that such men lived.  -General George S. Patton

I filled my cow tag during the 2014 season.  I sent you a message regarding 340 and my cow tag.  Please send a message with your contact.  I will be glad to share my hunting experience in the 340 area.
