I've called them with my old Weems hand call in jackrabbit distress sound, which sounds a lot like fawn distress. I've had them answer different wolf howls on a couple of e-callers but not come in, and in one case, every time they answered they were farther away. Not sure what my howl was saying to them but that group of four (a mama and almost grown pups judging by tracks) seemed to answer politely while leaving the territory.
The recorded wolf sound I used is labeled a mature Alaska male wolf howl.
