Which sounds for wolves?
« on: August 25, 2016, 01:01:53 PM »
Anybody have any experience calling for wolves? If so which sounds would be recommended? I'm thinking k9 sounds like yipping or baking and perhaps coyote howls. Any ideas?

Either wolf or coyote howling.  They are quite territorial

Three years ago I called some in in Colville. Next day I ran into the Bio guy tracking them. Raspy bear distress. FoxPro has hound sounds LOL  Coyote hurt yipping howling and wolf Howls. Elk or deer wish there was a moose sound. Rick

I was in Yellowstone two years ago and called a wolf if from 200 + yards while sitting in my truck with my hand-held predator call.  I carry one with a Old Time Favorite Brass Reed.  The sound is raspy.  Had the wolf come within 75 yards and at the same time a ranger pulled up be hide me so I stopped calling.  Give one of these a try with the brass reed if you have one.

I called in the Sherman peak pack 3 years ago with coyote serrinade. They interrupted and charged in howling and barking

I've called them with my old Weems hand call in jackrabbit distress sound, which sounds a lot like fawn distress.  I've had them answer different wolf howls on a couple of e-callers but not come in, and in one case, every time they answered they were farther away.  Not sure what my howl was saying to them but that group of four (a mama and almost grown pups judging by tracks) seemed to answer politely while leaving the territory.  :dunno: The recorded wolf sound I used is labeled a mature Alaska male wolf howl.
