Late Mission hunt
« on: August 28, 2016, 10:51:57 AM »
My hunting partner and I drew two of the quality mission unit muzzle loader tags.  Not being super familiar with the unit, I spent countless hours reading old threads and looking over maps.  I was able to make 3 trips over to the unit this summer and familiarize myself with the roads.  I believe I covered every possible inch from Blewett Pass to Stevens Pass to Wenatchee and down towards the Colockum part of the unit.  I feel like we have a good idea of the unit now and have different plans depending on the weather.  However, I know things will look much different the last week of November.  It is only a 6 day hunt and I want to make sure I'm not overlooking anything like closed roads or whatever.   So I am looking for any advice about making this a fun, quality hunt.
Thanks

If we have a late snow (late migration) and you want to take a more mature buck, don't over look the mouth of Ingalls Creek, Allen & Mills Creek (roads FS 7305 and 7300).  The east side of Wedge Mountain south of Leavenworth go in off of 97.  Good luck and have fun.   You will be able to fill your tag just about everywhere as long as we get some weather.

Thanks.  We actually didn't spend too much time in that area other than checking out a campground right off 97 and driving down Ingalls Creek Rd to about the trail head.  I'll have to spend more time there on my next trip over.

This time of year, as you probably know, you are just learning the roads, lay of the land and imagining the migration routes out of the high country.  If you have good snow the older bucks will be down valley closer to Wenatchee.  I am attaching a photo from the Mission taken by Mike Grubbs during the late permit hunt in 06.

Wasn't that a raffle tag buck taken much later than the Mission muzzy season dates?

Do you think there is any reason to pick up a Weyerhauser walk in access permit for North Cascades/Chelan?  I see there is a chunk of land in the corner just east of hwy 97 where it meets up with hwy 2 that is part of that area.

No need.

Your are correct.  Mike's hunt was a raffle tag.  He hunted mostly the Entiat until he got word that this buck was spotted back of Wenatchee.

Thanks.  No reason to waste $50 if no need.

Tagged along with a friend on the same hunt last year. We had 4-6 guys a day and covered a lot of ground. There was snow, but not a lot in the high country. It was tough. My buddy shot a buck on the afternoon of day 5. Nothing huge. I liked the area on either side of 97 the best. Only saw a couple of other hunters, so if you find a good buck you should have him to yourself.

Good luck

Lots of ground to cover. I think just get out, stretch the legs on some hikes and enjoy yourself. U could see the biggest buck of your life or not even see a decent 4 point.  They are there just a matter of hitting everything just right. Good luck hope u kill a toad. I think I would be spending lots of time off of blewett.
