How many decoys for the early season?
« on: October 13, 2016, 09:47:59 PM »
I know it's such a debatable subject but just curious what everyone sudjests for amount of decoys to throw out for these early season birds. I'm thinking maybe a dozen at max?

Depends on your spot. Alot of competition on public land, I'd put out a big spread of mixed species. Unmolested private ground the birds are comfortable with, I'd do a small simple spread.

Probably 4-6 dozen as we are hunting big water.  Small pond 6-12.  Just depends.  With the wind, you will have good movement, but will need weighted keels.  If all the decoys are moving, you could probably place as many as you want.

I'm going with everything we can carry out in one trip, probably about 36-40.  I have no real reason why, if we don't get birds into it we might pull some and move them around.

It's tough to say I've never hunted an opener with this amount of bad weather in the forecast.  I think we will have 4 people hunting Saturday morning and only planning to have about a dozen decs and 2 or 3 wind decoys.

Probably gonna throw out a dozen & I've got a new "decoy dancer" fully flocked decoy to try out this year. Running 3 people in layouts.

It is debatable. Depends on where your hunting. I'm taking 3 floaters, a spinner and 15 cartridges. I'm hunting unmolested birds on private ground, pitblind, new water in the field and walk in.
