Quick blacktail question
« on: October 31, 2016, 06:22:29 PM »
Yesterday while sitting on a clearcut I observed a mature Doe with what looked like one of this year's fawns feeding for about an hour. The fawn just had, for lack of a better term, a "Bucky" face. And had that typical dark patch on it's head. It was definitely smaller than the Doe but looked healthy and kinda beefy for it's size. I was 225 yards out watching them through my tripod mounted 15x56's but I still didn't quite have the reach with my glass to see if it had buttons or not. I'm not saying I would have shot him if I saw buttons. Just trying to learn. I figured if it was a yearling it would have been a spike at least.

So is the dark patch on the head a tell tale sign that it was indeed a buck?

That's how I call them in my book.  They definitely look different from the does by 5 months old.

If you were in an any deer area you could find out for sure.   :chuckle:

I did once, it was really good eaten.

I'm sure it was delicious.  I was in an any buck unit. I tried like heck to at least paint some spikes on him.

When you see a buck you just know...their look, posture, just everything about their look is different..the dark head is usually a giveaway but when you get those big old bucks look for the ol' roman nose

That is why a doe cape on a buck mount never works out well.

Not being Internet police here, just info.  In an any buck unit, buck fawns are illegal.  Antlers have to be visible, just info guys.
