Front sight issue ? Williams CS not so good.
« on: October 17, 2016, 06:51:42 PM »
I have a Thompson Black diamond 50 cal., stock except I added a Williams WGRS rear peep. Problem is that the stock front sight is too high. How do I resolve this?
Is there a front sight that sits lower on the barrel, or is there a riser of some type that elevates the entire rear peep sight?

Well just got off thw phone with Williams, seems that they do not make a front sight that sits lower on the barrel, and they do not have a way to raise the rear peep that they are selling folks.  :bash:

The CS guy didn't really seem to even care that they are selling a sight that is basically useless.  >:(

The principle of using a peep to me is pretty simple, center the front sight/dot in the peep and hold on target. Should this not be how everyone shoots a peep?
Below are pics of how far forward/elevated my peep is. This setting has it zeroed at 70yards. Not acceptable rear ramp positioning in my book.

Guess im sight shopping again...... :(

You could fashion a couple of shims to put under the rear sight.

I do not think a thin shim like an aluminum pop can would give you enough lift.

I have often used the thin type Teflon cutting boards that you can find for the kitchen for shims.  Since the material is Teflon it is tough and durable.

Thanks Sabot, Thinking shimming it up is my only option. An guess on how thick of shim it would take to get the rear sight back down on the ramp were it should be?

I may also "attempt" to "redesign" the front sight to get it lower, if I booger it up I can always buy another.  :chuckle:

How many screws hold the front sight on your TC?  I guess I am assuming only one.

All three of my Thompson black diamonds have the same Williams and I don't have this problem.  How much is it off!  What powder / projectile are you using.

I had just the opposite issue, my front sight was too low. Williams has a front ramp that will fit the TC BD but there machinist had to make the screw hole bigger because TC uses an odd size.

After that I just measured how high my front sight was and they sent me the correct dove tail to fit in the ramp to bring the peep into the correct position.

Yep just 1

105g. of powder(don't recall brand/style off hand) SST sabot 250g I believe. Myself and a buddy have both shot it with the peep.....same results.  :dunno: Maybe this archery guy is doing something wrong.
JR, is your peep mounted on the furthest back holes?

Do I have it mounted backwards?       :chuckle:

I used shims that I made by cutting a plastic water bottle into little rectangles that fit perfectly between the screws on my CVA. I believe I stacked 3 or 4 little shims on top of each other (with a tiny bit of oil in between each of them so they stayed together when putting them in place) and that set up has worked great for me, my buddy and my dad. All 3 of our CVAs have the same set-up. Peep sights are the only way to go IMO.

Looks like it is mounted correctly to me.  I also have mine mounted in the rear holes.  Mine are the XR version but I cannot imagine that would make that much of a differnce.  I shoot 110 grains pyrodex selcet with 250 grain thompson shock waves.  Kind of weird that this set up is not working.  All three of mine shoot the exact same with the set up and sight placement being the exact same.  The site slide mark is even with the top ramp mark.  These are my holds given the set up.

This has really got me wondering now....why mine is so off.
JR, do we have the same front sight?   T/C had me measure mine (front), from the top of the barrel to the very top of the sight (not the optic pin, the very top of the sight)  it is 1/2"

As long as the shooter is correctly centering the front pin in the peep, It should not matter who is holding the rifle, it should work the same I believe.  :dunno:

Yes...mine is 1/2" from barrel to the top of the site.  I can't imagine the longer barrel on my XR would make that big of a difference.   :dunno:

With your sight that high are you still shooting low??  If so how much low at 100 yards and is this based on center of the fibre optic?

I have not really shot much further than 70 yards, just getting started with the peep this fall. I had to move it that high just to hit bullseye level at 70. Yes aiming centered on center.

Last year I had multi deer, stock open sights on muzzy, missed my buck at 45 yards, had a second shot opportunity, so I picked up the bow and nailed it.  :chuckle:  Hence why I'm trying the peep thing now.  :chuckle:  Maybe this is an omen why I should stick to archery.  :chuckle:

My guess is you can move your peep down and sight it in just like mine.  Anything 100 yards or less just sit point of impact on the top of the fibre optic.  100-150 center the peep.  Works awesome for me.  Maybe one day we need to meet at the range to test my theory.  Move your peep down so they line up on the last graduation (top line).  Shoot using the top of your bead as POI at 70 yards and see what happens.

A shim should do the trick.  I shimmed my peep about 1/16" on my CVA Optima.  I used a scrap piece of black plastic, so it isn't much visible.  After sighting at 100 yards, the adjustment is right close to the middle.  Be sure to make a mental note of your sight adjustment marks.  You can catch the Williams peep in the brush and knock it loose, and you might need to make a field repair.  Anyway, I'm happy with the rear peep after shimming.  I just wish the front fiber optic was a little smaller.
