Best blacktail I've ever harvested
« on: October 30, 2016, 12:21:57 PM »
Really not much of a story it how I was able to harvest this guy. I've spent he last 2 years running trail cameras and searching all over for a nice mature blacktail. That was my goal a mature buck.

It wasn't until this summer that I was even able to catch a decent (what I would consider to be a mature buck) on camera. With all the things going on with my kids and other obligations I wasn't really going to be able to hunt that area like I really wanted to. So I went with plan b. The focus as to get dad his buck since I had multiseason deer and an archery rut tag from nov.1-16. Plus I was able to harvest an elk during early muzzy season. (Search for missing puzzle piece bull)

I picked the kids up Friday afternoon from daycare and we went straight out to my back up area. They helped me set up my ground blind so we could sit first thing on the morning. The kids and I would cover one area and dad would covery the area we couldn't in the blind

Well after sitting for a few hours the rain sets in. The kids are getting tired of sitting there and we are all getting wet. Without seeing a single animal. Now we decide to cover some ground in the truck. Load the kids up and off we go. We spent the next few hours driving and searching. Stopping and glassing. Picked up a grouse on our way.

I knew an area I wanted to get into that I had not had a chance to really scout. I was planning on hanging some cameras in the area but didn't have time to for one reason or another. We decide to head in and had to pick left or right. We checked Google maps and decided left. Didn't even get the truck turned and dad spots him standing on the edge of the road. I bail out load up and send one his way. He rears up and bails into the brush. We knew he was hit. But the area he dove into was super thick with fern and salal. We knew he was double lunged and wasn't going far by the blood on the ground where he was standing. Took us a few min but finally located him about 30 yards into the brush. Basically had to step on him to find him.

Now since dad is a disabled hunter and I'm his designated shooter we could of legally put his tag on this buck. Because we were able to get him a deer last year and he knew how many hours I have spent searching for a buck like this he told me to tag it.

I couldn't be happier with this buck. He is truly a mature buck and I was able to harvest him with my dad and my kids with me. I guess sometimes it's better to be lucky then good.

I would call him a main frame 3x3 with some trash. Not sure the small eye guards or the 4th point on his one side are long enought to be considered legal points.

:yeah: This exactly what I was going to say, took the words right out of my mouth.
Pain is temporary, achieving the goal is worth it.

I didn't say it would be easy, I said it would be worth it.

Wet deer, even wetter kids.  They will never forget that hunt, with their father and grandfather.  Congratulations.
