Idaho Unit 10A Whitetails

I'm curious why everyone is talking about 10a so much this year?  I've never seen so much excitement over that area, bigger deer are more north from what I've heard.

Ya idk I've seen A LOT of deer around elk city with lots of public land. Crazy how many people were in 10a last year. If people think they are going to experience a remote hunting experience with areas all to themselves they are mistaken. But everyone learns on their own.

Funny, I had the exact opposite experience last year in 10A. Never saw another hunter off of the road.

Maybe the any deer thing can attract people. My cousin said before there was so many doe taken every year there was a lot more deer around which is understandable. He's lived there since the 80s. Part of the reason why I don't head to elk city is he lives in Orofino.

Three nails is right if you get off the road you will see just a fraction of the people pounding the roads. But I prefer to hunt more open areas for them. More brush less trees I archery hunt 10a for elk but hunt whiteys in another unit. Never had much luck rattling but sitting funnels works for me.

Thanks man not the biggest I've taken in Idaho but I hunted him for three seasons, he went down hill from the first time I saw him. For some reason I haven't had much luck rattling, I've killed a few coming to the horns, but I've hunted Idaho for twelve years and figured out what works for me it the area I hunt. I sit for days waiting for the one to travel through my set. It's a whole different hunt than here in Washington.

I've always wanted to hunt Idaho around Thanksgiving but never could afford the trip or the time off until this year so I looked up the harvest stats from last year, found this unit, and pretty much just threw a dart at the map. Now hopefully that dart landed on a good spot lol I guess ill found out in two weeks.

Well I shot a 2 point and my buddy shot a doe. Saw 3 other really nice bucks but couldn't get a shot on them. Hunting whitetail up there is pretty interesting and not what I expected. It's basically blacktail hunting for whitetail. It's extremely thick country with decent mountains until you get up outside of Headquarters then it can get pretty steep. I was amazed by how choked out and thick the timber was around Pierce.

Yes it is!  Tough to find big timber around headquarters, we just got back today after hunting 4 days, 5 unnotched tags.  Could have killed smaller bucks and a couple does but we were after bigger.  My dad missed a spike and a chance at 2 3 points.  I only saw 2 decent bucks and didn't see much of a rut.  The weather was warmer than normal which probably didn't help.  We stayed at a nice place, don't want to say where because we want to stay there next year.  We ate at the pioneer and the food was amazing!!! You have to have tons of patience though, very very , very slow service.  The owner at the pierce motel almost ruined our trip, he double booked our rooms and gave us the "cabin" instead.  Just drove 7 hours and our rooms are already taken, not happy!  The cabin was a joke, very nasty, stunk, stained couch that was an extra sleeper that only an ompaloompa could sleep on.  Talked to a Huntwa member that had one of our rooms, he booked it in the summer, long before the guy gave us the room.  I was so pissed I couldn't even talk to the guy, we left and by the grace of God found a nice clean place to stay. Met some great guys, had a blast, the hunting was ok but we can't wait to go back!

Being a non resident, I probably don't know what I'm talking about, but, it seems to me two deer tags per person,  any deer and long seasons are not helping the deer population?  I could be talking out my butt, but I can't help help to imagine how much better the hunting could be if more deer lived?  Don't burn me here,  just thinking.

Just within the past 5 years I've noticed a drop in the number of deer I see by a lot. Even driving in in the dark I didn't see a deer off the road. All the spots I normally hit and see deer I didn't this year as much. I think the whole any deer thing has a lot to do with it. We got 4 bucks though. Brother missed 2 masher 5x5s he didn't get them to stop. Lesson learned. He's used to shooting everything open sights at 30-40 yards these were at 150-200 yards with a scope and he didn't take a good rest just off his knees. He was bummed but tagged a 5x4 thanksgiving day.
