Odd little birds my dog points
«

I hunt the Scatter Creek release site and my dog will lock up on some really nice, solid points on some kind of little bird that looks sort of like a woodcock. Anybody know what they are and do your dogs point them too? Are they a snipe of some kind? I'm curious if my knucklehead is the only one getting my hopes up by pointing these things. (yes, he also has been know to point gophers, meadowlarks, and ant hills when he gets bored......but that's another topic and those points are easy to discern from the solid ones he has on pheasants and whatever these birds are).

I've got a young pup in her first year hunting and I swear she can find and point every tweety bird in a field some days!

Snipe are game birds. Last I checked you just gotta have the state waterfowl endorsement. Think the limit was around 10

And remember, snipe must be shot with steel!

Another possibility is they could be killdeer.

He said they look like a woodcock though. Killdeer looks nothing like woodcock

They aren't killdeer. I have those in my back yard tormenting the dog all the time. After looking up and reading about the Wilson Snipe that looks like what they are. For some reason I always assumed Snipe would be a shore-bird, not in the middle of a field. The ones that he seems to point the best (along with pheasants) are the snipes and the meadowlarks.

My gordon points snipe quite well, I hunt him in a field that gets partially flooded and we get into quite a few of them. Super recognizable 'SCREEEEEEE" when they flush.
