Pearrygin Late Tag

Well been hunting hard and nothing yet. The other hunters I have ran into haven't seen anything with any size either. Seeing plenty of bucks but nothing bigger than 2 points and they are chasing does hard. With all these 2 points doing the breading it doesn't look good. Been hunting Beaver Creek area and Boulder Creek area. Been parking at gates and taking off. All the other hunters seem to just drive around, maybe they know something I don't. Looks like this wasn't a good year to draw a permit. Maybe we will get some weather before the season ends and that may bring some bigger bucks down. I think if their was any big bucks around where I been I should have seen at least 1 by now the way all these 2 points I been seeing are rutting. Starting to get a little down but not ready to give up. If anyone else has had this permit is it best to keep hiking behind the gates like I been doing or drive around to cover more area? When I Hunt this unit in regular season I hike back in as far as I can but maybe with less pressure now maybe I shouldn't be hiking way back in. What you all think? Open to ideas. Thanks

I'm surprised you're not seeing more bucks but from my experience it's still a tad early for peak rut. You've got plenty of time time left so if you're getting burned out I would pull out for a day or two, make sure you're fresh when the end comes. Don't get antsy and shoot the first half way decent one you see, I'm sure you waited a long time for this tag and you probably won't draw again for a long time so hold out! That's my best advise and good luck

I'm not surprised one bit he's not seeing big bucks. Several posts on Huntwa describing the pathetic shape of the herd up in the valley right now. Good luck to the tag holders, because these are supposed to be quality hunts where a guy can enjoy hunting trophy sized animals, even though that isn't the really the case this year.

I agree with MtnMuley here, good luck to the tag holders but this herd is not in good shape. A lot of big bucks were taken out last year during the general. I,m afraid its gonna be years before that herd is close to bouncing back. Stick with it,hunt hard, there are still a few big guys around. Good luck.

Boulder Creek is a good area when the deer migrate. My suggestion is to hope and wait for colder weather to get the bucks moving out of the Wilderness. That's normally a great tag in the past

It was 73F here yesterday.  You need some cooler weather to start bringing them down.

Stay in the truck and glass. cover ground. drew the tag last year and went on a few hikes and would only see a few deer. Saw 95 percent of them driving around.

   I was along with a guy that had this tag a few years ago and he spent the first full week hiking hard and getting off road. Saw very few animals. The following week we covered ground by vehicle and glassed. We saw exponentially more animals. It did help that it was similar weather to what we have now the first week, and close to 0 degrees the 2nd week, really got them moving. In general though, this time of year, covering ground and finding animals is key. Good glass and a full tank of gas will get it done.

Thanks for all the info guys. I am going to be back in the woods the next 3 days and then if I don't do any good I may wait till the last 5 days and hit it hard. If the weather man isn't lying they are calling for a chance of snow their Monday. Again thanks and I will let you all know how it goes.

Ive had a similar tag and I think your best bet is to wait till the last 5 days of the season.. Gas up the truck and cover ground and glass and glass..  And be patient if you have a hunting buddy with you, let him hold your ammo so you don't shoot the first 4x you see... Im still kicking my self in the ass for the buck I shot and I passed several 4x... lol  .. its tough to hold out with a rutty muley tag...   Good luck!..

If hiking makes you feel good than by all means go with it.  I have had this tag before and I agree with Kirk.  To cover a lot of ground, you will see way more deer driving and doing a spot and stock senerio.

Big country.  You have to cover ground to locate animals.  Locate the animals by driving and then figure out your approach to get on them as you can glass a long ways.

No I have not had the luck to draw that tag.
I hunted there for 25 years and spent many many weekends hiking that gorgeous country.
I would be hiking a different area every day praying for snow before I would be road hunting the Pearygin late tag.
That is not to say road hunting could not be effective, I would just be in heaven with out the pumpin patch.

I haven't had that tag but I have had the Chewuch tag. I love to get out and hike too so I understand your desire to do so. I have to agree that covering ground and glassing is key on these late hunts.
