New to duck hunting
« on: November 29, 2016, 10:15:56 PM »
Thought I might try to hunt some birds on my day off this Thursday. You really have to buy a small game license, and a federal bird stamp, and a state migratory bird stamp, and migratory bird authorization and sea duck harvest card?

Do you need to buy all of those only if you're hunting on salt water, or is it a salt water type of duck? If I hunt on a lake do I only need to purchase some of those things?

I think if I understand it right if I am hunting the west side on the coast I need to purchase all of those. Thanks for the help, I don't know why they had to make it so confusing and why they couldn't just clump in everything you need into one cost.

Sea duck harvest card, brant and snow geese aren't required unless you plan on hunting them.

Small Game, State Stamp and Federal Stamp are required.  Just the way it works.  With a 107 day season, it pans out.  Not like big game and you fork out all the money and your one and out for each species, unless you spent more on special permit apps. and are luck enough to draw.   :chuckle:
Cut em!
It's not the shells!  It's the shooter!

You can shoot any duck on the coast without the seaduck card, EXCEPT Scoters (all three kinds), Oldsquaw (Longtail), Harlequin, and both kinds of Goldeneye.

Mallards, Wigeon, Teal, Pintail, Ringneck, Bufflehead, Canvasback, Scaup, Mergansers, Redhead, and Coots (might have missed some) are all OK to shoot with only the State Waterfowl endorsement and the Federal Duck Stamp.

Thanks guys, that helped clear it up. It's still a bit of money for about 60 days of hunting at this point. I might do it.

One way to look at the cost is that at least your Federal stamp $$ goes to something good.   ;)
